EDWARD HENRY DEDRICK

Edward “Ed” Dedrick, age 86, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Thursday, January 25, 2024. Edward leaves to mourn his wife Brenda, son Craig (Cheryl Fines, granddaughters Emily and Maya), stepchildren Amber (Kevin Sylvestre, grandchildren Chaz and Trinity) and Adam Gade.

Edward was born on October 11, 1937, to Henry and Alma Dedrick in Brandon, MB. He was the youngest of four children: Gladys, Doreen, Elizabeth (Betty). Edward attended David Livingston School, Earl Oxford School, and Brandon Collegiate. Later, he completed the Secretary Treasurer course through the University of Manitoba.

In his youth, Edward enjoyed fishing and hunting with his father, and later enjoyed both activities with friends and family. He also belonged to the No. 82 Squadron of the Brandon Air Cadets. In 1956, he received a citation for bravery when he rescued Darlene Swanson from drowning in the Assiniboine River.

Ed started working for Ready Oxygen in May of 1956, and worked there continuously until his retirement as manager in 1996. He was a dedicated volunteer and coach for the Brandon 5-Pin Association, and later for the Special Olympics.

Edward married Alice Pohl on December 19, 1970. They remained married until her death in 2001. During this time, Ed, Alice and Craig enjoyed many family vacations to British Columbia and spent most summers at their cabin at Pelican Lake. At the lake, Ed was an avid fisher, golfer, and participated in annual horseshoe tournaments. Ed also enjoyed annual trips to Las Vegas with several of his friends.

On September 8, 2007, Edward married Brenda Wonnick. Edward and Brenda were very happy during their 16 years of marriage. They loved spending winters at their home in Weslaco, Texas. During this time, Ed enjoyed golfing and playing cards with Brenda and friends. In Brandon, Ed and Brenda would go for coffee every day with family and friends. Edward loved Brenda’s family as his own, and they made frequent visits to Redvers, Saskatchewan.

Though he was a quiet man, Ed was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. With his work, his family, and his volunteerism, Edward always displayed integrity, patience, generosity, and kindness. The impact of his life will be felt for generations through his family, friends, and the community members he helped.

The celebration of Ed’s life will take place at Memories Chapel on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. A private interment will follow but the family invites all to remain for a reception at Memories Chapel on their return from the Brandon Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Edward may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or to Special Olympics Westman, Box 20149, Brandon, MB R7A 6Y8.
