(ELINOR) RUTH SPICER
With love and sadness, we announce the passing of (Elinor) Ruth Spicer (nee Young), on January 24, 2024 at the age of 96.
Ruth will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Leslie Rentz and son Craig (Yvette). Predeceasing Ruth were her beloved husband Fred and her dear son-in-law Greg, as well as her seven siblings.
Smart, beautiful and ahead of her time describes Ruth from youth to her final years. A successful career woman (with The Globe & Mail and AC Nielsens) Ruth had the opportunity to travel, own her own cottage on Georgian Bay, amass a fabulous wardrobe and be a bright single girl in Toronto. Until one enchanted evening when she met Fred! Then the sparks flew, marriage ensued in 1962 and Ruth, now in her mid 30s, traded that life for one of happy wife and devoted mother in Ottawa and Winnipeg. Her strength got her through the heartbreaking loss of Fred in 1977. He remained always her man in the moon.
Throughout her life Ruth was a dedicated volunteer with many organizations. These included Sunnybrook Hospital after the Second World War, her church in Ottawa, Deer Lodge Hospital and Assiniboine Park. Ruth loved all the family dogs, movie musicals, Scrabble, and sports. She was always busy and active, cooking for friends, making the best fancy sandwiches for special occasions, swimming and playing tennis. Ruth "Ruthless" Spicer (as she was affectionately dubbed) kept her infectiously sharp wit to the end, as well as her sense of style, and her lifelong joys: chocolates and most especially music! Hers was a well lived life and TOB (the old broad) was an amazing woman. An inspiration to women around her, none more so than her daughter and nieces. We will miss her.
Please consider honouring Ruth's community spirit with a donation to The Winnipeg Humane Society or to St. Joseph's Residence, where Mum received such warm, compassionate care. At her request there will be no service, but there will be many Broadway songs played in her memory.
