TERENCE JAMES BERNTT

March 3, 1947 - January 30, 2024

Peacefully on January 30, 2024 at the age of 76 years old, Terry passed away in the comfort of his home with his loving wife and three children by his side.

Terry will be missed immensely and lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Penny, who was his best friend and soulmate; his beloved children, daughters, Bronwyn (David), Megan (Jon) and son Brendan; his three precious grandchildren, Mary-Louise, Garnet, and Harrow. Grandpa was their hero. Sharing in our grief is Terry’s sister-in-law, Paige McLeod (Ross Murray) and his loving niece and nephew, Lindsay (Jason) and Andrew (Kim) and their children, Ruby, Parker and Beauden.

Terry was predeceased by his parents, Muriel and Ben Berntt; his uncle Bud Holohan and his in-laws, Mae and Harry Van Der Veken.

Terry was born in Winnipeg and spent his early years in Fort Rouge attending elementary school at Lord Roberts School. Although Terry moved to River Heights in his teens, he continued many friendships and still considered himself a "Rouger". He attended JB Mitchell Junior High School and Grant Park High School. He attended the University of Manitoba and continued at Red River Community College in Business Administration. Terry, while attending university, was a devoted member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He was well known by the nickname of “Banno”. These friendships continued throughout his life, and he was the “glue” who ensured their friendships were sustained. He loved his friends and celebrated their successes with much pride.

Terry enjoyed sports all his life and was proud of being a Grant Park Pirate football player. He loved the Winnipeg Jets and playing golf regularly with his friends. He coached his children’s sports teams throughout their lives and was his children’s biggest supporter and his grandchildren’s number one fan!

Terry’s professional career included working for seven years in the carpet industry as a salesman upon graduation. In 1979 he joined his father Ben’s glass business and managed Fort Rouge Plate & Auto Glass on Osborne Street in the Fort Rouge Area. His son Brendan and daughter Bronwyn joined their Dad at the family business and upon his retirement in 2015, his son Brendan took over the business and moved it to Oak Bluff in a newly built, modern facility in December 2017. FRG has been a family legacy since 1968 for which Terry was so deeply proud.

Terry was a very proud “Winnipeger” and many friends called him “Tudge”. Tudge would tour anyone who visited us from out of town around Winnipeg, to all his favourite places. When his children were older, he enjoyed being a “snow bird” with Penny and their close friends in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico during the winter months. Terry loved to have his family and grandchildren visit to spend time with them every winter in Mexico, where he would spoil us all.

Terry was the most loyal person and his family was his universe. Dad was the center of his kids and grandkids worlds. We all loved his “silly side”, he laughed at his own expense, never taking himself too seriously and constantly had those around him laughing (with him or at him!). He taught us all that, “stuff” is just “stuff” and in whatever circumstances arise to stay true to yourself. Dad loved to give us all hugs and he always said “I love you”. He loved his time with his family and friends at the cherished family summer home in Matlock. He will be remembered riding his John Deere tractor daily with his cigar in his mouth riding around the yard.

Terry’s life was devoted to his family and friends. Grandpa was the heart of our family and his legacy will live on in his wife, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

A private family interment will take place. The family will be hosting a celebration of Terry’s life in the late spring and would love for all whose lives Terry touched to join us. The date and details of the celebration will be announced at a later date.

Terry always cared for and helped others in need. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre or K9 Advocates Manitoba.

“We miss you so much Terry, Dad and Grandpa. Your love is irreplaceable”.
