SISTER HELENE ROUSSEAU S.N.J.M.

(Sister Pauline-Antoinette)

At Actionmarguerite, St. Boniface, Manitoba on February 10, 2024 after a full, long life of service, Sister Hélène was called to her God. She leaves in mourning, her religious family, nephews and nieces and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Pauline, Madeleine, Georgette and her brothers Louis, Robert, Olivier and Jean.

Daughter of Antoinette Rodrigue and Georges Rousseau, Hélène is born in Ponteix, Saskatchewan on May 31, 1927. She starts school in Ponteix but following a family move to Manitoba, continues her schooling at King George School in Norwood and then at St. Joseph’s Academy. In her teenage years, Hélène is greatly influenced by her teachers, the Sisters of the Holy Names. Shortly after her graduation, in fidelity to a calling, she begins her religious formation in Outremont, Québec on January 24, 1947. Two years later, Hélène makes her first profession of vows on February 25, 1949 and her final profession on August 5, 1953.

As a member of a teaching community, she pursues her studies and after obtaining a teaching certificate she obtains a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Manitoba.

As a student Hélène had developed leadership skills with the Guides and the Jeunesse Étudiante Catholique. Later in her religious order, she will be called to serve as a local superior, and a school principal at Somerset, Manitoba. Between 1949 and 1968, her warm personality is greatly appreciated by numerous students in different schools: Immaculate Conception School, Saint-Pierre-Jolys, St. Mary’s Academy, Sainte-Agathe, Somerset and St. Joseph’s Academy.

For six years, from 1969 to 1975, Sister Hélène is called to serve her community as provincial superior. After a sabbatical year, she accepts to return to the classroom at Saint-Jean-Baptiste.

As it had been, so it will continue to be, and for her last 16 years as a classroom teacher, a guidance counsellor or giving courses in Catechetics it is all done joyfully and it brings happiness to the recipients. Sister Hélène also adds other responsibilities to the regular ones, for example, the spiritual formation for the SNJM associates and the coordination of the liturgical team of the parish. Sister has touched the lives of many and has been greatly appreciated.

The family and the members of the Congregation wish to express their gratitude to the staff of Unit 3DE at Actionmarguerite for their compassionate care given to Sister Hélène.

Prayers followed by the Funeral Liturgy will take place at Résidence Despins, 151 Despins Street, St. Boniface on February 15, 2024 at 1:15 p.m. with cremation to follow. The burial will take place at a later date at St. Boniface Cemetery, 917 Archibald St.

  • Loved when Sister Hélène and I met via my search for my 'birth' mom: Paulette Rousseau. Thankful Hélène gave me a tour of St. Mary's Academy which impressed me; furthered my education: became a teacher. • I was so saddened to hear about Sister Helene's passing, last September when I was in Winnipeg visiting my Mom, I stopped in at Actionmarguerite to see if I could have a visit with her, unfortunately, her unit was on lockdown due to illness and therefore I could not visit her! I remember her fondly, she was kind and compassionate. Rest In Peace Sister Helene! Say Hi to mine Dad for me! - Posted by: Deborah Giguere (cousin) on: Feb 14, 2024
