DONALD STEUART REID

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Donald Steuart Reid on February 8, 2024 at the age of 71 at the Grace Hospital with family at his side, following a brief illness.

Don is survived by his wife Cathryn, son Andrew, sister Lesley and brother-in-law Ken Enns, their son David (Lindsay) and his family. Don will also be missed by his two close cousins, Lorie Henderson and Kim Reimer, and Kim’s family. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Merren Tardivelle, Roberta Christianson, Roberta’s husband Chris, and their daughters Kristin Adams (Dean) and Keira Rudge (Trevor) and their families, and Sharon Rennie, her sons Chris (Andree-Anne) and his family, and Eric (Steve). He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Winona Reid, brothers-in-law John Rennie and Gabriel Tardivelle, and Kim’s husband, Dave Reimer.

Don was born in Winnipeg and raised in Fort Garry. An energetic and curious boy who once went shopping by himself at the local grocery store at age four, he loved animals like his pet chameleon, his rabbit John who turned out to be female, and the family poodle Monique. During summer he loved spending time at the family cottage at Falcon Lake with his sister and cousins. After stints at the University of Winnipeg, University of Manitoba, Sheridan College, a backpacking trip around Europe and several periods of employment with pizza place restaurants, Don graduated from Red River College with a diploma in Electronic Technology in 1981. Following his graduation he commenced employment as an electronic technologist at the manufacturing facility on Mountain Avenue owned first by Northern Telecom, then C-Mac Electronic Systems, and finally by Solectron. After the plant closed he spent his last years of employment prior to his retirement at the Canada Post mail sorting facilities in Winnipeg.

Don was a very intelligent and creative individual with a very wide range of interests. He enjoyed working on projects around the house and cottage. He loved motorcycles, cars and boats, and enjoyed working on his motorcycle and lawn tractor in the garage. He also loved building model ships and airplanes, working on his model railroad layout, reading Dickens novels, playing video and computer games, surfing the internet, scuba diving and barbecuing. At Lake of the Woods he loved fishing, canoeing, swimming and snorkeling, and hunting for crayfish and turtles with Andrew. At the end of the day he enjoyed sitting on the porch or on the deck with a cold brew in hand, visiting with family and friends.

Our family wants to express our gratitude to the Intensive Care Unit at Grace Hospital for their care and compassion in Don’s last days. Cremation has taken place, and a private family celebration of Don’s life will take place at a later date. If you wish to make a donation in Don’s memory, please consider Siloam Mission or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
