JOY WOOD

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Joy. Joy Leslie Wood (nee Gillies), passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, February 11th, with her loving husband Gavin at her side.

Joy leaves to mourn many family members and friends, the list is long. The list of Joy's accomplishments throughout her life is also extensive. In her time, she had a successful career in banking and built her own business in the investment and real estate field. Joy, however, would not measure her success in that manner. She achieved many material goals and attained accolades, but she thought of them only in passing.

Joy would measure her success in the way she used her achievements in the service of others. In her generosity to various charities, to her assistance to many friends and to the relationships she cultivated and held so dear. And to those who benefitted from Joy's generosity they knew that the material help paled in the light of the advice, the compassion and the heartfelt kindness with which she shared her gifts.

Unwavering care, love and tenderness were always extended by Joy to her family. We could never thank Joy enough for holding us all together bound by the soft ties of her enduring love. An enduring love that she shared with her beloved Gavin, her husband, her friend, her companion through all life's triumphs and trials. The loss of Joy will indeed cast a long shadow...yet made the more bearable by the light of her kindness, her compassion and her love.

The family wishes to acknowledge the many friends of Joy's summer home in Gimli and her winter home in Key Largo, Florida. Time and distance may keep some of those from being with us at her service, but do know that we will be thinking of you as you will no doubt be holding Joy in your heart. We also wish to acknowledge and thank the many staff and medical personnel at Grace Hospital and at the Brightwater Memory Care Centre for their care and compassion that Joy had received from all of you.

In lieu of flowers, if anyone wishes, a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or other charity of your choice would be appreciated.

A celebration of Joy's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Tuesday, February 20th at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I have many good memories of Joy. We were both faithful members of the “loose ladies golf group”, and the “loose ladies go literary book club.” Her intelligence and wit were a constant source of pleasure. I loved her down to earth, no nonsense approach to life, and her unique sense of humour. Joy, I am better for knowing you. Mel - Posted by: Mel and Ken Robins (Friend) on: Feb 21, 2024

  • Dear Gavin and Family. I met Joy many years ago at the U of W. We became friends and took a couple of bus ski trips to Colorado together. She was an expert skier and I was not. We lost touch, but I remember her well, especially when I heard she married a fellow Daniel Mac graduate. Gavin, I am send you my sincere condolences.
