FRED CHOMYN

March 4, 1932 - February 21, 2024

We are deeply saddened to announce that on February 21, 2024 Fred passed away just shy of his 92nd birthday. Fred always worked hard to take care of his family, he was dependable, true and unwavering in his beliefs and instilled a good understanding of right from wrong.

Fred was the only sibling to be born in Canada after his family emigrated from the Ukraine. Life was difficult in the beginning, but as years went on, things improved. He had a keen passion for cars and as a young man he enjoyed the thrill of street racing and followed up his passion by acquiring a trade in mechanics. He continued his career in the automotive field, retiring from MPIC as a Quality Control Inspector.

In 1954 Dad married his first love Bernice Kowalski, and moved between MB and ON while raising four beautiful children; Lilly (Robert), Elaine (Brain), Susan (Alan), and Larry (Laurie). While living in Swastika, ON, Fred was an active community member and proudly served as a volunteer fireman. He became well known for his bonfires. The massive fires became a place for the community to gather and enjoy their roasted potatoes and he ensured his fire-making skills were passed on to his children and grandchildren. In 1969 the family made their final move to Winnipeg. Dad was an avid fan of the outdoors and sports and shared these interests with his children and grandchildren.

In 1979, Fred married his wife Elizabeth Yurkiw. They happily shared many mutual passions that included square dancing, where they met many life-long friends here and in Arizona and Texas. It was while they were down south that Fred achieved one of his proudest moments and was able to claim a hole-in-one victory! They combined their active life with travel to numerous locations as well as a memorable cruise in the Caribbean with his daughter Lilly and her family. During the years Dad and Liz acquired their cottage at Silver Harbour and took great pride in it. He instilled a strong work ethic in his family by always having “jobs” ready when they visited but followed them up with quality family time and a few drinks. Family was very important to Dad and he valued the time he spent with them. Many of these times were around the card table where he taught his grandchildren the art of gambling, always ensuring somehow they would win. When he was still able, he helped with moving and building cottages and would visit whenever he could.

Dad will be forever remembered and dearly missed not only by his wife Liz, who affectionately referred to him as ‘Cookie” and his children, but by his grandchildren, Kyle, Robyn (Andy), Joel, Michelle, Sarah (Jason), Emily (Keelan), Jessica (Richard); great-grandchildren, Annalee, Christopher, Wren, Zachary, Isaac, Oakley, and his sister Mary. Fred will be fondly remembered by the Laberge and Yurkiw families. There were many exciting visits playing Rummoli, Dominoes and eating cabbage rolls. Fred was predeceased by his brother Bill and parents, Anne and Harry Chomyn.

Dad was a proud man, who believed the important moments were while he was able to experience and enjoy them. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held.

We love you Dad, and the memories we shared will live on forever.
