It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Erika Schmidt (nee Redmann) on March 2, 2024, at the age of 82.
Erika was born in Kirchdorf, Germany on December 5, 1941, to parents Lydia and Rudolph Redmann. Erika was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Siggy and Erich Redmann, sister Margret Schmidtke and sister Elsie Knoblauch. She is survived by her husband Ferdinand (Fred) Schmidt, her sons, Martin and James (Lisa) Schmidt and beloved grandchildren, Colin and Kara Schmidt. She also has many nieces and nephews across the country and other relatives still residing in Germany.
Erika and her family immigrated to Canada in 1951. She was 10 years old when her family made the perilous trip to find a better life in Canada. A few years after she was done school, she enrolled in courses to become a professional hairdresser.
In the early 1960s she met the love of her life, Fred and they married in 1963. They were married for over 60 years. After her two children were born, Erika stopped doing hair and focussed on being a mom and helping out in the family electrical business where she worked for 31 years. She would later go back to her first career love, hair styling which she continued up until a week before her passing.
Erika will be missed by all who knew her.
Special thanks to the nurses and doctors at St. Boniface Hospital who provided her compassionate and excellent care in her last days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Erika to St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
