RICHARD JOSEPH DUCHECK

Peacefully, surrounded by family, Richard passed away on March 1, 2024, at the age of 80.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Betty, daughter Amber (Kevin), son Chad (Nancy) and grandsons, Nolan and Matthew, sisters, Evelyn (Roy), Barbara (Morris), Janet (Rick) and Teri, sisters-in law, Nancy (Werner) and Gwen (Kurt).

Richard (a.k.a. Roam) was born in Selkirk on January 3, 1944, and grew up on the family farm in Lockport helping his parents with potato and grain farming, and always getting into trouble with his best buddy, Eugene.

He attended Lockport School and decided farming and a desk job weren't for him; so, after various jobs he settled into his occupation of pressman at the Winnipeg Free Press for 36 years, retiring in 2001 as night foreman.

Richard enjoyed hunting, but he loved to fish! His greatest joy was camping and fishing with his grandsons at Lake of the Prairies. Weekends and holidays were spent at Black Lake, Lee River and the Whiteshell. Every spring Richard and his fishing buddies, Ron, Keith, Wally, Ray, Brian and Andy, flew out to various lakes throughout Manitoba. Once retired, you could find him fishing his favourite spots at Grindstone and Hecla.

Cooking was Richard's passion! He spent countless hours searching for the best recipes filling four three-ringed binders. He will always be remembered for his delicious hamburgers and was renamed "Richieburger".

Richard and his Uncle Bill built our family home on Lockport Road where we spent over 30 years raising our family and forming lifelong friendships. In 2002, our retirement home was built at Pelican Beach north of Gimli. Richard enjoyed building decks, developing the backyard, and puttering in his haven, his garage. When he wasn't fishing, you could find him on the golf course at Links at the Lake golfing over 100 games in 2004! Over the past 22 years on Corona Crescent, Richard has developed a close bond with all his neighbours and his Gimli Texas Hold'em buddies.

After retirement, Yuma, AZ became our winter home. For 13 wonderful years the people at Desert Paradise became our winter family developing bonds that we cherish today. Lovely Loma Linda in Guayabitos, MX was Richard's final winter retreat for three more fun-filled years enjoying the beautiful weather, cooking for our new friends, playing cards and walking barefoot along the sand beaches.

Richard will always be remembered for: his sense of humour, his love of buying gadgets, his creative ability to build and fix just about anything, and, by his nieces and nephews for "THE CLAW".

Richard lived his life to the fullest and took total control of it right to his very last breath!

A special thank you to Dr. Ade and Trudy for their compassionate care and understanding while helping Richard through these challenging times. The nurses and support staff at the Gimli Hospital were angels.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard's memory to: Manitoba Lung Association, M.S. Society, and MAiD.

A private celebration to honour Richard will take place in the spring of 2024.

  • YIKES! I'M IN SHOCK! Dear Betty; Please accept our heartfelt condolences. I've known you and Richard since about 1962...A&W Lockport, etc. Richard and I always had a special kinship which I will cherish forever. A crowning glory may have been during our visit to your home in Gimli in October 2022 when Doris Ann and I were treated to one of Richard's culinary specialties...pickerel fillets...which my wife cannot stop talking about. May he rest in peace...(perhaps a round of golf with Elton? Watch out, Richard...Elton had been known to cheat).
