CHARLES (CHARLIE) STEEPLE

August 13, 1930 - March 5, 2024

On March 5, 2024, kind-hearted and gentle Charlie Steeple passed away peacefully at the Misericordia Health Centre.

Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Charles Steeple in 1944 and Amy Steeple (née Cooper) in 1995. He was also predeceased by his dear sister Belva in 2019.

Charlie will be lovingly remembered and very much missed by extended family members Albert Hilton, Mark and Jocelyne Baribeau, and Debra and David Houle.

Charlie and his older sister Belva were the closest of friends and enjoyed many wonderful adventures travelling to both the East and West Coasts of Canada and through the beautiful provinces between them. They ventured to Churchill and to Europe and have a large collection of photos capturing their memories.

Charlie enjoyed spending time at his West Hawk Lakefront cottage sharing great family adventures. He enjoyed a good boat ride but would never have managed to kill a fish to eat it as he was far too gentle-hearted and had a profound love of nature. He absolutely loved animals, particularly dogs.

In his working years, Charlie was employed by the Manitoba Telephone System, and often recounted that his employment with them helped him overcome his terrific shyness. Installing landlines and working with customers was a great source of pride. He worked for MTS until his retirement in 1986.

Charlie was adept at carving wooden characters and his extended family are thankful to have some of his art with them to keep Charlie close by, even though he has gone. He was an avid learner and played the accordion as a means to express himself. He enjoyed the television program Polkarama and tapping his toes to the music.

As Charlie aged, he got more and more forgetful. Even with fading memories, he never required a memo note to remember to be thankful and kind until the very end.

Charlie’s extended family would sincerely like to thank Bob and Jeannie McKenzie, the wonderful staff at the Rosewood where Charlie spent his last years and the caring staff at the Misericordia Transitional Care Unit for the care Charlie received in his final days.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
