It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearest Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma, Jane.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, CWO Keith M.S. Deller and brothers, Edwin and Anthony.
Jane will be greatly missed by daughter Starr (Brian), son Keith (Wanda), daughter Lynne, son Erin (Kerri) and daughter Melody (Brian). Her memory will also be cherished by grandchildren, Andrea (Ryan), Marc (Kelly), Gwen (Marcel), Ailene (Emil), Will (Carly), Bryan (Candice), Crystal (Jason), Allison, Erik, Megan, Kerra and great-grandchildren, Rhett, Garnett, Hailey, Hannah.
Jane was the oldest of 10 children and will be lovingly remembered by her siblings, Lillian, Nancy, Rosalie, David, Carolyn, Rita, Stanley and their extended families; many relatives, friends near and far.
After High School, Jane entered the workforce by joining the Women’s Army Corps; as Sergeant, she was very proud to serve as an Intelligence Analyst, learned to drive a tank and was an expert with a rifle.
She worked for three Federal Departments in National Defense, Agriculture and Transport Canada.
In keeping with Jane’s enthusiasm for Community Service over many years, she found several avenues to help those in need.
As a Life Member of the Girl Guides of Canada, she received her 70 year pin, holding positions across five provinces and had the honour of receiving the Merit Award personally from Chief Commissioner Lady Baden Powell. She also enjoyed the comradery over lunches with the Trefoil Guild.
Jane was a member of the following three organizations which fall under the umbrella of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Manitoba: Order of the Eastern Star, Friendship Chapter #67 as Worthy Matron and Grand Rep to Florida; Order of the White Shrine, Althea Shrine #2 as Worthy High Priestess (twice) and Watchman of Shepherds; Member of Bethesda Shrine #12 in Minneapolis and Daughters of the Nile, Sphinx Temple #116. Jane was also Honoured Royal Lady and Life Member of Royal Purple of Canada, Winnipeg Lodge #12; Noble Grand of International Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) Alpha #92; Madame President of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #23; Director, Secretary of Senior Achievers Social Club; Charter Secretary of Toastmasters International District #64; Member of American Legion #198 in Osage City, Kansas and Associate Member of Army and Navy Veterans #60.
Jane began her initial involvement with the Royal Canadian Legion by joining the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary at Charleswood Branch #100 (2nd Vice President for three years) followed by membership in Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Branch #141 (Secretary for four years) and Montecasino Branch #178 Ladies Auxiliary as President.
Jane then transferred to Royal Canadian Legion, St. James Branch #4 where she had remained an active member for over 20 years. There, she was Membership Chair for the Ladies Auxiliary and Scholarship Chair for the Branch. She visited hospitalized Veterans across the City as a member of the Winnipeg Legion Joint Hospital Sick Visiting Committee since 2004. Jane was a Life Member, very proud to receive the Certificate of Merit and Highest Award, the Meritorious Medal.
Jane was also Deputy Commander of District #5, LA of Manitoba/NW Ontario Command.
Needless to say, Jane lived life to the fullest. Whatever she did, she did it well and with great joy, offering her energy, talent and good humour with compassion and generosity. Jane was very proud of her family and loved to hear about their achievements, talk about recipes or “what’s new with you”? Her special phone calls and decorated greeting cards with her signature that always included “who wore Army Boots” will be missed very much. She will remain the brightest light in our lives as she lives now in our hearts.
To Honour Jane’s wishes, a gathering is to be held with good food and polka music- where Life is to be Celebrated and not mourned!
Jane’s Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3K 1W3.
