It is with great sadness that Dr. Mrityunjay Samanta passed away peacefully at the age of 84 in the morning of March 12, 2024 at Victoria General Hospital.
He was born on June 3, 1940, in Kashipur, Hooghly, West Bengal, India. He was one of eight children born to Dr. Rajendra Nath Samanta and Mrs. Binapani Samanta.
He attended Belur Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira for his I.Sc. Degree. He then attended Presidency College, Kolkata for his B.Sc. (Hons.) Degree in Statistics. He obtained his Master's (M.Sc.) Degree from the University of Calcutta. Subsequently, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona, Tucson, USA. After that, he moved to the University of Alberta in Edmonton for his postdoctoral research. In 1972, he joined the University of Manitoba as a Professor in the Department of Statistics. He retired from the Statistics Department in 2008. Throughout the course of his distinguished career, Professor Samanta demonstrated exceptional talent in both research and teaching. He had multiple graduate students and had published numerous high-quality research papers in scientific journals. His seminal contributions to the field of Statistics have made an impact that will last forever.
He got married to Chandra in 1970 in Kolkata and moved to Edmonton. He is predeceased by his wife, Chandra. He is survived by his two children, James (Michelle) and Urmila, his two granddaughters, Rachel and Emily, his two sisters, one brother and several nephews and nieces in India, USA and UK.
He was a very honest and strict principled, passionate and helpful person. He helped by tutoring people and giving good advice. As a hobby, he used to do fishing and gardening. He loved Bengali culture and the Bengali community. He was one of the founders of the Bengali Association of Manitoba (Bichitra) and the Bengali Cultural Society of Manitoba (Sanskriti).
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 18, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In The Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3T 5Y4.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be sent to the Hindu Society of Manitoba.
