Elisabeth (Liz) passed away with her husband Blair by her side at the Assiniboine Centre on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the age of 68.
Liz was born and raised in Brandon and attended Earl Oxford and Vincent Massey. Following graduation Liz attended Brandon University and obtained her Bachelor of General Studies. She was accepted into the faculty of social work at the University of Manitoba and received her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1982.
After graduating, she accepted a social work position at BMHC and worked there until 1997 when she moved to the Child and Adolescent Treatment Centre.
In 2003 she became a liaison between the province and Prairie Mountain Health. In 2006 she returned to CATC as the program manager. Liz truly loved her job and the people for the next 8 years when she retired for the first time.
Never one to be bored, she unretired and researched and wrote the content for the website Stress Hacks for the government. She then retired for the second time. This retirement lasted a little longer but in November 2018 she began work as the Senior Manager of Regional Services for the Alzheimer Society.
She worked at the Society until June of last year when health issues started to interfere. Eventually, Liz was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) which led to her passing.
During her working career, Liz was a member of the Manitoba Institute of Registered Social Workers, Manitoba Association of Social Workers, and The Canadian Association of Social Workers. She served on the CASW board as the Manitoba rep for many years meaning two trips to Ottawa every year as well as one trip to a different city each year. She was able to visit cities such as Yellowknife, St. Johns, and Charlottetown while serving.
Liz was a person with many and varied interests. She loved to sketch and paint, and while in high school she attended the Banff School of Fine Arts. Liz took many art classes at the gallery in Brandon as well.
She loved to cook and bake and there were literally hundreds of opportunities to wine and dine with friends. We were also members of the Brandon Wine Society a private gourmet club and for many years season ticket holders for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
Liz loved her physical pursuits as well. She loved downhill skiing and there were about 25 trips to the mountains with family and friends. Her favorite ski spots were Whitefish Montana, Fernie, and Banff and there was one adventure with friends to the alps with a side trip to Paris! She also loved cross country skiing and golf in the summer.
She truly lived life to the fullest and there was much travel in the later years.
Besides the many ski trips there were multiple hot vacations to be had. This included places like Barbados, Cuba, Jamaica, Belize, Thailand, Palm Springs, and many destinations in Mexico.
Liz was predeceased by her parents, Angus and Ursula Brown, father-in-law Jack McLeod and sister-in-law Jackie Davies.
Liz is survived by her loving husband Blair, son Adam (Naomi) Wilken, stepdaughter Hilary (Stan) Shurb, sister Linda Lidster, brother Jim (Faye) Brown, sisters-in-law, Susan (Doug) Johnston, Barb (Tim) McLeod and her two grandchildren, Miles and Stella Shurb who affectionately referred to her as Gigi!
She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews and our dog Juju.
The family wish to thank the staff on A 300 for their loving and caring work in the last week of her life. Also thank you to Melissa Peters and Ken Burton and staff for their help.
A Celebration of Liz’s life will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., Imperial Ballroom, Victoria Inn, Brandon Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Western Manitoba, 457 9th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4A9 or the Minds in Motion program affiliated with it.

We were so saddened to hear of Liz's passing. A favourite memory is of joint samosa ventures: three of us gals making them, husbands in charge of dinner. It was always such fun!
