JOY SIMONSON

With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Joy Simonson on March 21, 2024.
Joy is lovingly remembered by her husband Ted; daughter Norma Goodman and children, Sherri and Donnie; son Don and wife Carol and their children, Allan, Jennifer and Stacie; son Curtis and wife Janine and their children, Matthew (Riza) and Jason (Leah); daughter Ingrid and husband Terry Sokolosky and their children, Heather (Peter), Gord (Amy) and Brittany (Brodie). Also surviving are 17 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law: Edie, Peggi, Beth and Betty and many nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Emily Rattliffe, her sister Ruth and her husband Arne Aune, and many brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mom was born March 28, 1936, the second and youngest child of Percy and Emily Rattliffe. Mom was raised in Winnipeg living on Toronto Street. Elm Creek was a very special place as she spent holidays there with her sister Ruth and Arne and family.
During her youth, mom took violin lessons achieving her grade VI level. She played in the school orchestra and in later years at the Swedish Pavilion during Folklorama and for a short time with the Winnipeg Pops Orchestra.
Mom and Dad first met when they were quite young, through the Simonson-Aune connection. Dad must have been quite smitten with her as he thought locking her in the chicken coop would attract her attention, it must have worked.
Mom and Dad met again in their late teens when dad's brother, Carl was dating mom's high school friend, Edie and the rest is history.
Mom and Dad married on April 16, 1955, and had 68 years of marriage. Mom was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker and had said many times that the happiest time of her life was when she was raising her "little family". She was a wonderful wife and mom, so kind and loving. She was the rock of our family.
Mom and dad travelled quite a bit. In the early years it was mostly for dad's work. In later years it was more for pleasure. Mom joined Dad a couple times to visit his family in Sweden. There she found kindred spirits and expanded her crafting knowledge. Mom loved doing all kinds of crafts and she did absolutely beautiful work and many of her pieces are still cherished by her family.
The past few years have been challenging for mom but she has handled it with grace and serenity.
Thank you to all the staff at The Rosewood, The Waverley, Deer Lodge Centre and Douglas Campbell Lodge for the excellent care mom received.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A public viewing will take place at 1:30 p.m. prior to the 2:00 p.m. service.

Your arms were always open

when I needed a hug.

Your heart understood

when I needed a friend.

Your gentle eyes were stern

when I needed a lesson.

Your strength and love have guided me and gave me wings to fly.
