PAUL JOSEPH (JOE) EILERS

May 2, 1927 – March 23, 2024

Paul Joseph “Joe” Eilers, beloved husband of the late Bertha Eilers, passed away peacefully with Hilda by his side on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon Regional Health Centre. Cremation has taken place. As per his wishes, there will be no service and his family will cherish his memory privately.

Joe Eilers was born on May 2, 1927, in Lawlor, Iowa, the youngest of five boys.

The Eilers family immigrated to Canada when Joe was a toddler and settled in the Fertile, Saskatchewan area. Joe attended the Fertile School from 1933 to 1945 during which time he made life-long friends with whom he kept in touch throughout his life. Joe enjoyed all aspects of running a mixed farming operation and thus began his life-long career as a farmer. He farmed for many years with his brother, Ron, and once he sold his cattle, he worked off the farm near Regina or Riding Mountain for many winters.

In later years he and Ron would spend their winters in Brandon where he enjoyed curling, bowling and Brandon Wheat Kings games. It was in the early 1990's that Joe met Bertha Cormack through their mutual love of bowling. He and Bertha were married on October 7, 1994, and together they enjoyed many adventures traveling across Canada and the United States often playing the slots along the way. Travel to visit family took them to Regina, SK, Edmonton, AB, Victoria, BC and Minnesota, USA. Joe took up golfing with Bertha in the summer and they were both devoted Toronto Blue Jays fans and enjoyed several bus trips to watch the Blue Jays play. In the winter Joe and Bertha enjoyed five and ten-pin bowling and followed the Brandon Wheat Kings. For several years they enjoyed winters in Weslaco, Texas and later in Victoria, BC.

After Bertha's passing in 2017, Joe continued to live independently at Village Green where he enjoyed all the activities including cards, pool and shuffleboard tournaments, weekly coffee get-togethers, monthly suppers and bus trips to Sand Hills Casino. He had the best neighbours on the first floor of Village Green who were all so very good to him.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Christine Eilers; his beloved wife, Bertha; brothers Art, Ron, Don and Cliff, and nephews David Eilers (Patricia), Karl Eilers and his niece, Linda Driedger (Peter).

He will be fondly remembered by his niece, Karen (Mark) Koch and nephews Michael Eilers, Claude (Marilyn) Eilers, Glenn (Leslie) Eilers and David (Andrea) Eilers and their families. Joe will also be lovingly remembered by Bertha's family: Hilda (Ray) Wood, Larry Cormack (deceased), Betty (Phil) Persian, Allan (Debbie) Cormack, Dennie Cormack (Debbie Simpson) and grandchildren Chris Cormack, Kim Cormack, Josh Cormack, Jordan Cormack, Brian Wood (Jacenta Bahri), Brad (Maria) Wood, and great-grand daughter, Sedona MacKenzie Wood.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joe may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 1379 Kenaston Boulevard, Winnipeg, MB R3P 2T5.

A Life Well Lived. Rest in Peace.
