ELINOR FAY JOHNS

(ARMITAGE)

Peacefully, on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Health Sciences Centre, Elinor passed away at the age of 79.
She will be missed by her children, Stephen (Carla), Carol and Sheila, grandchildren Edie and Leo, and beloved family and friends who meant so much to her.
Elinor was born in September 1944 and grew up with her three dear sisters Beth, Ann and Carol in beautiful Glenlochar Valley, near Miniota, Manitoba. Her work in diaconal ministry brought her to Saskatchewan, where she met and married Rob. They settled in Steinbach in 1973 before moving to Winnipeg in 1984.
Elinor had a quiet, gentle soul and enjoyed music, especially singing with the Carolyn McDade circles through the years, including the weekend before she died. She was a kind and patient friend to many, and a natural at building community with those around her, maintaining meaningful connections with family and friends near and far.
A service to celebrate Elinor’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd., Winnipeg, with reception to follow.
Her family thanks the kind and caring staff at Health Sciences Centre SICU.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Matthews Maryland Community Ministry or to a cause of your choosing.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I was very happy to be part of this wonderful event. Thank you for all the stories and photos of Elinor’s friends and family. I didn’t have much time with she and Rob in life so was grateful to get to know her through the funeral. Wonderful stories and pictures. A handsome couple they were. And a very accomplished, kind and loving lady it seems. Much to be proud of. Love to you 3 who have lost a great mom. Love Susan - Posted by: Susan stewart (Rob’s younger cousin. ) on: Apr 28, 2024

  • We grew up together as neighbours in Glenlockar, though Elinor was a bit younger. Rural neighbours develop life-long relationships and Elinor will be missed by all of us who shared those early experiences. Our sympathy to the Johns and Armitager families. • Dear Carol and Sheila, I am so sorry to hear about your Mom's passing, and offer my deepest sympathies to you at this time. Your Mom was such a gracious and beautiful person, and you two are just like her. Much love, Val x - Posted by: Valdine Anderson (Friend of Carol and Sheila) on: Apr 11, 2024

  • My deepest condolences to Elinor's family. I had the pleasure of knowing Elinor and babysat Stephen when he was a baby. Such a kind lady. Note Rob is buried next to my parents. When I visit their grave I think of Rob. - Posted by: catherine choate ( friend with her time at Steinbach United Chirch) on: Apr 08, 2024

  • To Elinor's family and the Armitage families. It was with sincere sadness that I heard of Elinor's passing. My sympathy goes out to her family and also Beth and Carol and their families. Our paths do not often cross but the memories of good times we all shared at Glenlochar functions will be with me always. My thoughts and friendship are with you all, Betty - Posted by: Betty Ellerington Baskier (friend and former neighbor in the Glenlochar community) on: Apr 06, 2024

  • I met Elinor while taking courses through the U of W. I believe we only took one course together. The instructor always asked for comments. Elinor had the ability to slowly, thoughtfully articulate a perspective that resonated with most of us. This viewpoint was usually one none of us had thought of. A gentle soul who thoroughly enjoyed life. When she moved into my apartment building I was so happy that she was now part of our community. The compassion seemed to flow out of her seemingly with no effort. I will miss her. Janet - Posted by: Janet Toews (Friend) on: Apr 06, 2024

  • I’m so sorry for your loss. Your mom, (Mrs. Johns) always made me feel so welcomed when I would come over. Reading this beautiful tribute, I was reminded of the many wonderful memories I have. She’s with your Dad now, at peace and without pain. Sending hugs! ❤️ - Posted by: Avril French Varga (Friend of Carol and Sheila) on: Apr 06, 2024

  • Stephen, Carol and Sheila, What a beautiful obituary you wrote for your mother. My sincere sympathy and condolences on your loss. I hope you will be able to hang onto all the wonderful memories of both your mother and father, including some you may remember from visits to us in Pinawa and of us to you in Steinbach. - Posted by: Gwen Greenstock (Friend) on: Apr 06, 2024
