Alfred was born in the Ukraine, to parents of German descent and speech. In 1945 he, with his parents and younger brother fled west to what became the American zone of occupation, in northwestern Bavaria. There Alfred completed his schooling with grade eight in 1950 and in the same year he emigrated to Canada, with his family. They first settled in Whitemouth, Eastern Manitoba, which was a German speaking farm community where his mothers’ sisters had settled from 1903 to 1906.
Alfred already was employed doing chores for farmers during his early teens in Bavaria and arriving in Canada just after turning 15 he never had the opportunity to attend school in Canada. He learned written English mainly by reading comic books. In 1955, Alfred was hired by Canada Packers and worked there until they closed the plant in the mid 90s.
The work he found in his first five years in Canada was mostly seasonal: highway repair in summer and cordwood cutting in winter, interspersed with a stint at rail maintenance for the CPR and several periods working on the hyrdo-dam construction sites on the Winnipeg River.
Alfred was a member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church as well as the German Club on Flora and Charles. He never married but had the same close companion Violet Bailey for over 30 years, until she died in the late 1990s.
Alfred was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Rosalie Kienetz and by his nephew Martin Kienetz. He is survived by his younger brother Alvin, his niece Helen (Gabriel) and nephew Peter (Chun-Peng) and great-niece Audrey.
We would like to extend a thank you to Lions Manor staff for taking such wonderful care of Alfred.
A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut Street.

I remember serving Alfred back when I used to work at the GSW. I remember him telling me some of his stories. He was really interesting to listen to. I hope he finds peace and rest. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Vanessa (Waitress at GSW) on: Apr 09, 2024
