It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Enid Galbraith (Sowerbutts / Irving) at the age of 83 on April 9, 2024, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada after battling Dementia and Alzheimer’s for more than 10 years.
Enid was born on July 16, 1940, to Joseph and Maude Irving in Lancaster, Lancashire, England.
Enid married Peter Sowerbutts in April of 1963 and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in April of 1967 and started helping out with kindergarten class at a private Christian school called MCS which was located on Sturgeon Road in Winnipeg.
In April 1981, Enid moved to Houston, Texas with Peter and their three sons where she continued to teach kindergarten at South Shaver Christian School where a new Christmas tradition was started to go take a "dip in the ocean" with a drive to Galveston until Peter's passing on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1985.
After travelling west to see her younger sister Denise Seed and in communication with her family, Enid decided to move back to Canada to start anew.
It was a move back to Winnipeg where Enid felt that her three sons would have a better life and she had more long lifetime friends in Canada.
Enid was attending Kirkfield Baptist Church, and it was there that she met her second husband, Henry George Galbraith and after a brief courtship, they were married in July 1990. The newly married couple then started attending Victory Baptist Church and were actively involved in the church community.
Mom started travelling a little bit more later in life after the trip out to see her sister in California, she and Henry would go down to Hot Springs, Arkansas to see her grandkids, and her sons, Lee and Scott. They made that trip several times and Mom’s last Arkansas Christmas trip was in 2015 with all of her sons and grandchildren before Alzheimer’s and dementia required her to have extensive hospital care.
Enid was predeceased by her parents, Joseph Edward Irving and Maude Davies, her first husband, Peter Sowerbutts, her brother Douglas Irving and her sister Phyllis (Edgar) Parkinson.
Enid is survived by her second husband Henry George Galbraith, her three sons, Mark (Tarra) Sowerbutts, Lee (Becky) Sowerbutts, Scott (Erin Yokem) Sowerbutts and her grandchildren (her little scallywags), Josh, Ben, Austin (Morgan), Stuart, Tyler, Andrew, Nick and Brady. Enid is also survived by her brother Alan (Janet) Irving and her three sisters, Joyce Lee, Denise (Jack) Seed, and Barbara (Richard) Brown and many nieces and nephews and close family friends who will cherish her memory.
We would like to thank Khrisner (Khris) Abille and the staff of the Fourth Floor of Golden West Centennial Lodge for their care and support during mom’s seven year stay with them.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
The family has decided to take Mom back to England to lay her to rest and a private ceremony for family will be held in England in July 2025.
