GLENDA L. ARMSTRONG

After a long life filled with laughter and happy memories, Glenda Lynn Armstrong (nee Paul) passed away on April 11, 2024. She was 81 years of age.

She was predeceased by her loving husband John (Jack) Douglas Armstrong, and parents, Edith and Henry Paul.

Glenda was a kind and loving wife, mother and friend. She will be missed by her daughters, Jeanne and Carolyn (Lea), her brother Bob (Jo), relatives and many friends. Glenda and Jack also took under their wings some “extra kids”, Sylvia, Jennifer, Mike and their children, who became a big part of the family.

Glenda and her twin brother Bob, were born December 2, 1942, in Dauphin, Manitoba, where they were raised. Her love of water, nature and animals was nurtured when spending time at the family cottage at Dauphin Lake. She entered nursing at Winnipeg General Hospital in 1959 and graduated as an RN in 1963. She met the love of her life, Jack, in 1961 and they married August 29, 1964. She was an Assistant Head Nurse in Obstetrics until she had Jeanne in 1968, then Carolyn arrived in 1971.

Glenda was an avid volunteer and activist, who was passionate about helping others and advancing justice causes close to her heart. She volunteered at her daughters’ schools, with various charities, and was active at St. Vital and later St. Mary’s Road United Churches. She was involved with various church committees including the board, gardening club, scrapbooking club, Bible Study Group and was often the church photographer.

Glenda and Jack were instrumental in co-founding Project Opikihiwawin, a cultural educational and support group for families with adopted and fostered Indigenous children. She volunteered with Project O for over 20 years and received the Adoption Council of Canada Award for her dedicated work in the adoption field.

Glenda supported Jack throughout his Pediatric career and during his work with Doctors Manitoba and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). She enjoyed their CMA travels across Canada, and to England and Australia. She maintained friendships with her nursing classmates and with Jack’s Medical classmates, right until the end. She enjoyed planning and attending nursing reunions, including her 60th nursing reunion in the summer of 2023.

She was passionate about creating and publishing 19 books of photography for family and friends. In later years, she volunteered as a receptionist, and taught computer and publishing courses, for Creative Retirement until age 75.

Glenda loved family, friends, gardening, reading, nature and photography. Our family enjoyed many years of fun at Sioux Narrows with relatives in the summer. Glenda was known for her infectious laugh, sense of humour, for organizing social activities, and for bringing different groups of people together. She had such a positive influence on people and was always willing to help and support others in pursuing their dreams. She will be missed dearly.

A service will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Road United Church in Winnipeg. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Cemetery.

Special thanks to Reverend Phil Read, and to the kind, caring staff at Golden Door Nursing Home where she resided in the last weeks of her life.

Donations may be made to Winnipeg Humane Society, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, or St. Mary’s Road United Church.

  • What a gorgeous, full, and rich life Glenda led. A pillar of strength in the community, in the lives of so many, and in her dear sweet family story. While we have not met Glenda, her passion and intention is found in her family. The lessons she shared, the compassion she showed, and the life she lived will live on with each of those who knew her, learned from her, and loved her. • I am so sorry to see this news. Glenda was a longtime customer at The Preferred Perch and was just such a lovely woman. I used to love hearing about her amazing garden and all the birds that visited. She was always so caring about how my business was doing and so supportive. I have a couple cards that she gave me over the years of her just sending support and well wishes to me. I will treasure my memories of her extreme kindness. My condolences to her family and, may Glenda rest in the most beautiful garden filled with the sounds of the birds she adored. - Posted by: Sherrie Versluis (Business) on: Apr 21, 2024

  • Hello Jeanne and Carolyn, we have such fond memories of your mom and dad, when we were neighbours at the townhouse in St. Boniface, we had just returned to Canada after a study year in Australia, and, your parents were our immediate neighbours. They were just sooo helpful to us!! And, we kept in touch for many years, but, after Covid hit, and mail service slowed, we lost contact, which was unfortunate for many of us on many levels. Charlie and I returned to Australia in 1997, altho' our kids are in North America, one in Canada; one in the US, so, we are truly a worldly family!! Just sending you good thoughts about your wonderful mom!! And, your dad too!! Much Love, Janice and Charlie Braekevelt. - Posted by: Janice and Charlie Braekevelt (friend) on: Apr 20, 2024

  • Thoughts, prayers and condolences to Jeanne, Carolyn, Lea, family and friends. Auntie Glenda had a big heart, contagious laughter and smile and was interested in all people she met. She will be missed. - Posted by: Julie Lemoine (Friend ) on: Apr 20, 2024
