He will be lovingly missed by his wife Shirley of 57 years. He also leaves to mourn his son Darryl; estranged daughter Melanie; special pet Ninja; his nieces, Sharon (Rick), Nancy (George), Lori (Don), Charmaine (Tom), and Sandy. Joe was predeceased by his mother Anastasia; father James; sisters, Stella and Jenny; as well as niece Debbie.
Also left to cherish his memory are his sister-in-law Donna (Rod); brother-in-law Ken (Debbie); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
During the last few years of life, Joe faced many health challenges but maintained his love for life and positive attitude.
Joe attended Manitoba Teachers’ College, then completed his B.A. at the U of W. and his B. Ed at the U of M. He worked as a teaching principal at schools in Eddystone, Sandy Hook and Springfield. Joe moved to Arthur Day Junior High when it opened, then after 12 years graduated to Murdoch McKay Collegiate as an English and History teacher/department head.
During his time in Transcona Springfield, Joe was on the Executive Committee for two years and served as a council rep for over two decades. The highlight of his career was receiving a Certificate of Teaching Excellence from the U of M thanks to the nomination by one of his students, Andrea Ilchyna LaBelle.
Joe retired in 1999 and he and Shirley enjoyed many years of travelling and just enjoying life.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Ireshia Edirickrama and staff at the Concordia Hospital for their excellent, compassionate care. Also, a big thank you to Dr. A. Leylek and his nurse Jennifer Fisher Cote at CancerCare Manitoba.
As per Joe’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre or the charity of your choice.

Dear Shirley and Darrell, We are so sorry for your loss. It has been a pleasure to visit you the past few years. I didn’t think he would remember me but he did after 40 years and his voice was the same. I have fond memories of him as my teacher. God bless your family with comfort and strength. - Posted by: Diane (Funk) and Lowell Dennis (Former student) on: May 04, 2024
