DAVID JOHN BAIN

March 15, 1952 - May 7, 2024

It's with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of David at the age of 72. We've lost one of the good ones.

David was predeceased by our parents, James and Hilda Bain of Winnipeg. Left to cherish his memory is his twin sister Dianne (Herb), nephews, James Gulash (Jodis, Larson and Leah), Marcus and Ryan Steeds, niece Erin Gulash (Doug) as well as our cousin Sandra Worley. He also leaves behind his brother Donald (Jan).

David had a 35-year career as a Special Education teacher at Gordon Bell High School. He really loved his job and formed some great friendships over the years.

His big passion and commitment in life was the cottage on Gun Club Island, near Kenora, Ontario. David and our dad cut the trees down on the site and started building a large and beautiful cottage for all the family to enjoy. This was a huge undertaking for him over the years. There were hundreds of trips across the water loaded with building materials in his 16' Lund boat. He became a master carpenter and was so willing to help many friends with their carpentry jobs over the years.

A special thank you to Herb Stephen for calling David your brother. He felt the same way! David so enjoyed the several winter vacations together in Palm Springs. Thank you for your support, humour and heartfelt friendship. He cherished you as a brother as well.

Many, many thanks to his long-time friends Bruce and Rene for your unwavering friendship. He so appreciated you in his world and always came away better for the visit. Your help, especially in the past year, has been greatly appreciated. Thank you, Nina, for your great help in the kitchen with food prep. He really appreciated your visits too! Also, we'd like to give a heartfelt thanks to the ladies, Mary Kay and Margo for spending all those Wednesday afternoons discovering walking trails around the city, as well as those valuable chats. He really enjoyed your visits.

David treasured his many friendships over the years. There's too many to mention but please know you were all so appreciated. He enjoyed those many chats and much laughter!

David was diagnosed in the spring of 2020 with Stage IV colon cancer. This came as such a shock but he never once asked "why me". He fought the fight bravely for four years.

Many thanks to the staff of Palliative Care who helped us so much to be able to keep David at home. Also, our heartfelt thanks to the MAiD team for your compassion and true kindness. You helped to make the final journey so peaceful. We'll always be grateful. Many thanks to CancerCare for their amazing help in extending David's life by four precious years. Thank you, Dr. Goldenberg and staff, at the McDermot location as well as the Victoria Hospital location. Your support and compassion was so appreciated.

At David's request a funeral will not be held. At a later date family and friends will gather to honour and celebrate his life. Many thanks to the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre for all your help.

When tomorrow starts without me

Please try to understand

That an angel came and called my name

And took me by the hand

The angel said my place was ready

In Heaven far above

And that I'd have to leave behind

All those I dearly love

But when I walked through Heaven's Gates

I felt so much at home

When God looked down and smiled at me

And told me "Welcome Home"

so when tomorrow starts without me

Don't think we're far apart

For every time you think of me

I'm right there in your heart

  • It has been one year since Dave left us all. That is so hard to fathom. There hasn’t been a day when I didn’t think of him and miss being able to chat on the phone or get together. Dave’s friendship has made my life rich. I miss him very much, but am grateful for all the great times we spent over the 35 plus years together at Gordon Bell, at Lake of the Woods and just around town. Till we meet again ! - Posted by: Erika Kinn (Friend) on: May 07, 2025

  • Dear Diane and family. Our most sincere sympathies are extended to you. Your brother was a kind and generous person. He truly was a beautiful soul. It was a privilege to have shared time together with him as a teacher and friend. He is already missed and will continue to be. May you find comfort in your memories especially as you experience nature and recall his joy with the beauty he saw in it. We grieve his passing together with you. • First met David and Clan winter of 2000. Since then we created memories with family and friends. A statement from Dave always ended in a sincere chuckle and smile. A beautiful soul. Rest you head and hands, your work is done. Those who knew you still love you. Our paths will cross again one day. Through the trees and long grass, our laughter shared into the night with the sounds of water hugging the shore. - Posted by: Drew and Wynn Brueckner (Gun Club Besties) on: May 11, 2024
