Vera “Terys” McCowan (nee Sotkowy), long time resident of the Grosse Isle, MB area, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on May 13, 2024 at Stonewall Hospital just short of her 91st birthday.
Predeceased by her husband of over 50 years, James W. McCowan, Mom is survived by her son James “Jim” (Karen) and daughter Susan and four loving grandchildren.
Mom received her RN diploma from Regina Grey Nuns’ Hospital School of Nursing in 1955 and went on to become a Flight Attendant with Trans Canada Airlines. During her flying career, she became reacquainted with a childhood friend, Jim McCowan, who at the time was a pilot with the same company. They wed in 1960. Mom returned to her nursing career in the OR at the old Grace Hospital on Arlington Street in Winnipeg.
She gave up her exciting career after son Jim was born, concentrating on raising him and soon after, daughter Susan. In 1970, the McCowan family purchased a small grain farm in Grosse Isle and Mom became a full-time partner in farming, putting her heart and soul into trucking grain, tending to her huge garden and participating fully in community clubs and events, selling her delicious home baked goods, farm-raised honey and vegetables at the Prairie Dog Train market.
Education was important to her, and thus served as a school trustee for the Interlake School Board as well as sitting on the Board of Governors for the University of Manitoba.
In their retirement years, Mom and Dad had many great motor-homing adventures in the U.S. where they would enjoy the warm company of lifelong friends and countless hours on the golf course.
Mom wanted to thank the many nurses, health care aides, pharmacists, EMS personnel and physicians who assisted her through her medical journey. With their help, she was able to live independently at her suite in Stonewall until just 10 days before her passing. She and her family will be forever grateful for their kindness and compassion.
At mom’s request, there will be no funeral service. If people so desire, donations would be greatly appreciated to the South West District Palliative Care Program, Stonewall MB or Harbour Lights Ministries in Arborg, MB.
