It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Norman Lobson on May 16, 2024, at Holy Family Home. Norm was 93 years old.
He will be deeply missed by his children, son Craig (Caroline) and daughter Karen (Rick), his cherished grandchildren, Chelsea (Ryan) and Brooke (Tom) Lobson, and Russell (Amber) and Megan (Josh) Carriere, and his adored great-grandchildren, Brynn, Remy, and Maya. Also left to cherish his memory are many nieces, nephews and extended relatives and friends.
Norman was predeceased by his best friend and wife of 55 years, Marilyn (2011). Dad was also predeceased by his mother Katherine as a young boy, his father Jack (1961), stepmother Beatrice (2001), and his beloved brothers and sisters-in law, George (Doreen), Art (Joyce), Alvin (Lorna) and Erwin (Elaine).
Born in Winnipeg on August 13, 1930, Dad spent his early years in the North End and Norwood areas. It was on Monk Avenue where he met Marilyn (nee Lyon), the girl next door. Marrying in 1956, they began their lives together buying a home in St. Vital where their children were born. They moved to Southdale in 1967 where they raised their family, later moving to Island Lakes. Dad moved into Sage Creek 55+ Apartments in 2019 where he found a new community of friends, enjoying watching a game with the guys or meeting for morning coffee to tell a few tales. Dad was extremely lucky to maintain full independence until last September. His almost daily excursions to Shoppers Drug Mart and McDonald’s or Tim’s for a coffee and treat kept him going.
In 1946 dad started as an apprentice in Pattern Making with Winnipeg Pattern & Model Works Ltd., becoming a partner with his father in 1955 and proprietor in 1961. In 1987 his son purchased the business. Dad was extremely proud to have the business remain in the family for a third generation. In 2006, after many years of being semi-retired, he finally embraced retirement.
Dad loved his craft and was very proud to be a life member of the American Society of Metals and longtime member of American Foundry Society (AFS). In 1955 he entered the Freemasons, initiated with the King Edward Lodge and later as a member of Three Pillars Masonic Lodge, receiving his 65-year pin. He proudly participated in the Khartum Temple of the Shrine for over 30 years where he was a member of the Ritualistic Unit. He was also a longtime member of St. Philips Anglican Church.
In 1961 Mom and Dad built the cottage in Matlock. This quickly became Dad’s favourite place on earth, returning every summer for the last 62 years. You could always find him working around the cottage, building, fixing, power washing, trimming trees, tinkering in the shed, making strawberry rhubarb jam, feeding birds, relaxing in the hot tub, heading out for ice cream or playing a game of crib, where he would often skunk his opponents. The cottage simply won’t be the same without him.
Dad was an avid sports fan, beginning with cheering on the Winnipeg Monarchs and supporting our home teams as a season ticket holder for both the Jets and Bombers. If a game was on TV dad had full control of the remote and there was no point in trying to change it. No matter the distance between them, after a Bomber game a phone call would follow with his brother George to discuss the victory or defeat. Dad was a bit of a reluctant traveller, but after mom’s convincing and planning, he always came back glowing. Together, they enjoyed travelling extensively to many countries over six continents.
Later in life, nothing brought Dad more joy than spending time with his grandchildren. He was always there to cheer them on in their chosen sport or support them at school events with a special treat as a reward for their efforts. He was very interested in their studies and careers, always lending an ear to chat about life or provide advice. He was immensely proud of all their accomplishments and loved them dearly.
Dad was a fiercely determined man with a gentle soul, who shared his many gifts with his family. He will be forever missed.
A memorial service will be held for Norman on Friday, June 7, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd.

My condolences to the family. My visits to Matlock have been short over the years but on my last trip I was able to spend a short time with your dad at the cottage along with Karen and Rick. Your dad and mom have held a special spot in our hearts over the years. Judy would often speak of the influence they had on her family.
