LARRY RONALD HACKER

October 2, 1952 - May 18, 2024

Born in Gladstone, Manitoba, Larry grew up (often picking stones) on the family farm in Waldersee, Manitoba where Saturday night trips into town for milkshakes and french fries reigned king. At age 15, the farm was sold, and he moved to Brandon with his family where he attended Neelin High School. To the detriment of many door-to-door salespeople, he fixed everything himself, loved working with his hands, and so began a welding career at Canadian Steel Tank. Following this, in 1983 with only a cardboard box full of tools, he started his own company specializing in anhydrous ammonia maintenance (while literally building a new home with his brother that same year for a growing family of five). This newfound career took him to every highway, correction line, and section road of Manitoba, and with each new day he looked forward to the long countryside drives and small-town lunch specials.

In the early years, he raced stock cars (the trophies of which his “little buzzards” broke to pieces) and loved ski-doo life, but later his passions and devotions revolved almost exclusively around family life. He absolutely loved attending every sporting event, activity, and ceremony for his children and grandchildren and he could always be found in his chair, ready and waiting to supervise the next family gathering (the past dates and times of which he could recall with painstaking accuracy).

Larry’s humble presence and spirit will be carried forth by his spouse (Diane), children, (Tracy, Laird, Jerry, Shauna, Lisa, Jeff), grandchildren, (Rylan, Mabel, Josie, Alice, Emerson, Adler), family, friends (and coffee shop strangers he most definitely would have made friends with), all of whom were the luckiest to have a brother, uncle, Dad, father-in-law, and grandpa who always put everyone else first.

If you knew Larry, please come Celebrate his Life with us on Thursday, May 30th at 3:30 p.m. at the Dome Building on the Keystone Centre grounds in Brandon, Manitoba (don’t worry Dad, we made sure to find a place with lots of parking).

Given his journeys, memorial donations could be made to CancerCare Brandon, or the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Cardiac Clinic, or the Brandon Club, but perhaps instead of flowers or donations, please also consider taking your family and loved ones out for coffee and cheesecake – maybe even at Coffee Cultures here in town.

And rest assured Dad, whenever something seems too hard, we will always remember that “there is no such word as can’t!”, and even though the hurt is unimaginable, we are all doing our best not “to sit around and blubber all day”. With all of our love!
