BARBARA ANN TYLER

May 24, 1948 - May 20, 2024

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Tyler (nee Britton). She passed away in the presence of her Lord and Saviour while in her sleep at the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre.

She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth, mother Hazel, sister Cathy and brother Robert. She is survived by her son Michael and his partner Lisa, grandchildren, Jenna, Lisa’s children, Melissa and Riley, her sister Theresa, and brothers, Lindell (Hap), Patrick and Sean.

Barbara was born on May 24, 1948, in Edmonton, Alberta, the oldest of seven siblings where she lived until her late 20s. She met her wonderful and loving husband Ken while they were both in hospital in their early 20s. They were married in December of 1973, and shortly thereafter started a new adventure moving to Ottawa. Their first and only child, Michael, was born there in 1977. It was during this time that Barbara went to school for her eventual career in Health Records. The next adventure began shortly after as the now family of three, moved to Winnipeg in 1979, where Barb began her career, and Ken went to Law School. After Ken graduated, it was time for the next chapter as Barb and family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1984. While in Regina, Barb’s career flourished and so too did her volunteer work with St. Martins Parish and the Catholic Women’s League. In 1992, the family moved back to Winnipeg and remained there until 1998 when Barb and Ken started their next and longest chapter in Vancouver and eventually Surrey, BC. They remained for 20 years (the longest stop in their lives together). After Ken’s passing in 2018 Michael brought Barb back home to Winnipeg to be closer to her family where she remained until her passing.

Throughout Barb’s journey, she made lifelong friends at every stop along the way. Her generous spirit and warm smile left lasting impressions on everyone she met. Ken and Barb both looked at every person they met as a new potential friend they could not wait to welcome into their lives. Whether it was from connections made at work, volunteering through the church, casual conversations in restaurants, or home care workers in her last years, Barb’s friends (really her extended family) kept growing. Her adopted extended family of Tanja, Michelle, Charlene, Cheryl, Joan, and all the other workers who cared for Barb in her later years have a very special place in her loved ones’ hearts for how well they cared for Barb and her last years. It was a testament to Barb’s nature how so many of the staff and residents made sure to let the family know what impression Barb left on them in her short time at the Simkin Centre. She will be missed by many.

Funeral services will take place in Edmonton, Alberta at a date not yet determined.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to direct donations to the Saul And Claribel Simkin Centre (The Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre) where Barb received such wonderful care in the last year of her life.
