I served on Dr. Maxwell's service as a medical student, intern, and had contact during my neurosurgical residency. I was particularly impressed with Dr. Maxwell's care and compassion of his oncology patients. So many patients were towards the end of their life and many doctors restricted their analgesics for fear of addiction. Not Dr. Maxwell, he always did everything possible to keep them comfortable. In many cases he discharged patients with home prescriptions for the strongest analgesics available, including some narcotics only available by injection in which case family was instructed how to administer injections. This among other traits were extremely impressive as was his kind and gentle nature and overall compassion for his patients plus the manner in which he dealt with colleagues, nurses and other staff. - Posted by: Arnold Zeal, MD (student, intern, resident at HSC) on: Jun 03, 2024

Dr. Maxwell's skills as a hematologist saved my life when I was in my early twenties. I became a nurse, married and had 2 children. I am now in my seventies and have 2 grandchildren. He was a wonderful doctor and man. The peace of the Lord is extended to his family. - Posted by: Kathy Murdoch (Former Patient) on: May 27, 2024

Ian cared for my dear husband Philip and was also a great friend. We all enjoyed Friday night YMCA swimming when our children were young. Such a lovely, caring man. Dr. Brian Sharkey also cared for Philip so I have great memories of both of them and their supportive care. - Posted by: Christine Smith (Friend ) on: May 25, 2024

I worked with Dr. Maxwell for many years and he was an amazing, passionate, caring, Doctor. Not only towards his patients, but their families and friends. He was always friendly to the staff on the wards, and even when I saw him over the last few years, I’d always get a big hug and smile from him, and he would inform me of what was going on in his life and always asked how I was. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and we were blessed to have him in our lives. Sending heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends. Everyone will miss him immensely! - Posted by: Marilyn Illchuk (Coworker ) on: May 25, 2024

Dr. Maxwell was my mom’s and my best friend’s Oncologist. He treated them both so well, they both looked forward to their appointments with him. Though they ended up terminal, I am glad they were cared for by him. He deserves all the accolades he has earned. Cancer is ugly but he made it tolerable for both of them. Winnipeg was so blessed to have had him. My condolences to his loved ones. - Posted by: Jocelyn Greenwood (Professional ) on: May 25, 2024

Linda and I would like to express our most sincere condolences to Ian’s family. We had the pleasure of living next door to Ian, Susan and Ian jr. For many years on Groveland Bay. Ian was definitely a great neighbour and generally a kind and thoughtful man. We note the reference to Dr Brian Sharkey who coincidently was our primary care provider when we lived in Winnipeg. On one occasion Dr. Sharkey gave me a referral to see a hematologist. When we spoke of the referral he told me that he was referring me to a good friend of his and that he would take great care of me. Then he told me he was sending me Dr Ian Maxwell. I was so proud to be able to tell him that Ian was my next door neighbour and he did take good care of me. A great guy! He will certainly be missed by family, friends and the medical community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time. - Posted by: Linda and Len Seguin (Friend and neighbour) on: May 25, 2024
