MAURICE HINTON

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the passing of Maurice Hinton on May 23, 2024, at St Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba after a brief illness. Maurice was born on May 12, 1931, and had just celebrated his 93rd birthday surrounded by his family.

He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his daughter Ann and his son Eric (Judith) as well as his grandchildren, Martha (Anh), Rachel (Dustin), Emily (Raymond), and Samuel as well as his great-grandchildren, Lillian, Hudson and Emersyn along with his cousins, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Maurice was predeceased by his wife, Mona, his parents, Eric and Augusta, and his brothers, Harold and Donald.

Throughout his whole life, he was known as a great storyteller, but never for his brevity. Maurice had a sharp wit and extensive quote catalogue which entertained all who met him. Even during his illness, his joyful personality shone through as he interacted with family and staff.

Maurice was born and grew up in Deer Lake, Newfoundland and enjoyed a carefree childhood filled with fun, mischief and love. As a boy, he was filled with a sense of curiosity and wonder and loved an adventure. He approached life and others, even early on, with positivity, kindness and patience.

He met the love of his life, Mona House, in Corner Brook and they were married on August 12 of 1955. They spent 62 wonderful years together.

Maurice worked in the mining industry his whole career, working in a variety of mining camps across Canada and was greatly respected in his field. The Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum honoured him with a fellowship after over fifty years service and stewardship. The annual general meeting felt more like a family gathering than an industry convention.

He loved any project, small or large, and had the ultimate patience to see things through. He designed and built the family home in Springdale, NL and also built a seagoing sailboat as well as a Dory design called a Rodney.

Maurice learned to love golf, especially with his good friends in Edmonton. After moving to Winnipeg in 2016 he continued to improve his game until 2023 extended season.

The highlight of many people's birthday was Maurice's rendition of happy birthday played on his harmonica; however, a birthday wasn't needed for him to musically entertain.

The memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Niverville United Church in Niverville, Manitoba. Interment and committal service will take place at a later date in Newfoundland.

The family would like to thank the staff on the 4E medical ward at St. Boniface Hospital for all of their care for Maurice and the family during his illness. They would also like to thank the Minds in Motion program at Wellness Institute for the joy the program brought him over the last six years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
