ALEXANDER (SANDY) DONALD

November 6, 1938 - May 31, 2024

Alexander Donald of Alexander, Manitoba passed away unexpectedly and suddenly on May 31, 2024.

Born in Bellshill, Scotland on November 6, 1938, Sandy split his life between Scotland and Canada, emigrating when he was 44 - but never forgot his Scottish roots.

Growing up on a dairy farm in Lanarkshire, Scotland, Sandy left school at 14 to follow his love of farming. It was through Biggar Young Farmers Club that he met Mary Semple, the love of his life that he would spend 60 happy years of married life with. Their union was blessed with two children, daughter Celia and son Sandy Jr.

Sandy was a natural entertainer, winning the talent competition at the Ayr Butlins holiday camp, as a stand-up comic, among other competitions. Through his life in Scotland, he and some of his friends would entertain at hospitals and pensioner’s homes to bring brightness to people’s lives.

In the early eighties, Sandy and family moved to Alexander, Manitoba. Sandy wanted a change from dairy farming and chose the wide-open spaces of western Manitoba to put down roots and grain farm.

Once settled, Sandy was convinced to take his real estate license and enable other farmers from the UK and Ireland to make the jump over the Atlantic to Manitoba. He proved to be very successful at his “second career” and made many close friends through his straightforward, honest, and caring approach.

He was heavily involved in the Westman Scottish Association and loved to get together with other British and Irish folks to have fun and promote the culture. He had a knack for making people laugh with his wide repertoire of, sometimes colourful, jokes.

An avid accordionist, golfer, ploughman and football fan, Sandy lived a long, full and extraordinary life.

He is predeceased by his father McLean and mother Elizabeth (Betty). He is survived by his wife, Mary, daughter Celia (Darryl) and son Sandy (Jodi), and his beloved grandchildren Sarah Jane, Kevin, Morgan, Paige and Chael. He also leaves his sister Wilma and her family, in Scotland, and many, many friends.

A Celebration of Sandy’s Life will take place on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Memories Chapel – 330-18th Street North, Brandon, Manitoba at 2:00 p.m.
