OTTO RUF

October 10, 1936 - May 26, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Otto Ruf after a lengthy battle with heart disease, on May 26, 2024 at the age of 87 years old.

Otto was predeceased by his wife Bernice in 2015. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Kelly, Alison and Perdita and his grandchildren, Chaizz (Caroline) and Ainsley (Connor).

Otto will always be remembered for his great sense of humor, quick wit and warm smile. He and his late brother Helmut owned a successful custom home building company for over 60 years. We will miss the countless life lessons he instilled onto his family, including his unwavering integrity, dedicated work ethic and the ability to find humor in everything.

Arrangements have been made at Klassen Funeral Home and there will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we would request that donations be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

  • We have been neighbours with Otto for 47 years. He is was a very hard worker, always out cutting his grass and you could hear him working in his workshop. When we built our cottage at the lake he made the long staircase for us to go downstairs, plus he and his brother Helmet put windows in our kitchen many, many, many years ago. His craftsmanship was of expertise. We would enjoy speaking over the fence with him, he was always positive and cheerful and a complete joy what a nice man. We will miss him very very much but he’s up in heaven now with Bernice. Our deepest condolences to the family. - Posted by: Paul and Nancy Saltel (Neigbors) on: Jun 17, 2024

  • I live in Hollywood, California, so would go home a few times a year to visit Dad. One day late last year, he wanted to see a few things. One was he asked me to take him to the CPR train station on Main Street and Broadway. He was excited to see the inside since he hadn’t been in there for 50 or so years. Unfortunately the doors were locked. But he was happy to look through the windows, and happily reminisced. Once we got on the car, I said “where next?” It didn’t take him long to say he’d like to see THE LEAF at Assiniboine Park. We went and he was thrilled. Awed at the building itself, the tall waterfall, and the plants and butterflies. Then we ate in the lobby restaurant and shared my cocktail. He was like a kid, all amazed at the place. His other fun thing when I was there was going for coffees once a day to Mountain Bean on Henderson highway. He loved to sit at “our” table by the front door and just laugh and shoot the breeze. One day we took a drive and he said let’s go see my old house in Transcona where I lived in the 1950’s after arriving in Canada from Germany. It was still there. He explained the rooms behind the windows, etc. He explained to me the layout inside. Then another day, after Mountain Bean, and after visiting his beloved Canadian Tire store, he said “let’s go to KFC - I have a craving for that as it’s been a long time since I had that”. So we took a nice drive and went to the one on Leila. He was so happy to have KFC. I love these memories I have of our last two visits together last year. - Posted by: Kelly Maguire (Daughter) on: Jun 08, 2024
