ELIZABETH (BETSY) ALEXIS KEDDIE

July 22, 1941 - May 18, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law, cousin and friend Elizabeth (Betsy) Keddie (nee Bird).

Mom ("Nan") will be greatly missed by her son Greg (Jacquie); daughter Alison (Jeff Bodner); grandchildren, Justin Keddie and Anna Bodner; brother Frank (Shirley Bird); sisters-in-law, Diane Fleming and Ev Keddie; brother-in-law Andrew Keddie (Susan Berry); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Betsy was predeceased by her husband David Keddie; parents, Frank and Peggy Bird; parents-in-law Basil and Dorothy Keddie; sister Marnie Crumb; and brothers-in-law, Dave Crumb, Stephen Keddie, and Harvey Fleming.

Mom grew up in Wildwood Park and raised her family in Fort Garry. Over the years she made lifelong friends who she continued to enjoy time with on a regular basis whether it was pursuing shared hobbies or just enjoying coffee or dinner together. When her children were older, Betsy pursued a career in accounting and obtained her CGA designation in 1987; the majority of her accounting career was spent at Winnipeg Building and Decorating where she ultimately retired.

Mom was the matriarch of the family, and her home was where we gathered to celebrate all of our family events and celebrations. Her door was always open, and we all loved being able to drop in and spend time with her. "Nan's" greatest joy were her grandchildren (and honourary grandchildren) and she always looked forward to spending time with them and attending all their activities.

The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and doctors at Victoria Hospital and Health Sciences Centre for all their care and compassion, as well as Ethical Death Care for their touching photo-biography video honouring Mom's life, accessible through the 'tributes' link at the bottom of this obituary.

There will be a Celebration of Life at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • In filling out this form, it asked what my 'relationship' was with Betsy. Well to be honest she was literally my 'other" mother. This led to some confusion when we ( as in Betsy, Alison, Greg and myself were all out together as youngsters, due to the fact that I am also an Allison, so when people inquired as to what the darling children's names were, she got quite a few odd looks as it seemed as though she had named both her daughters the same name. Although many, many years have passed since I have seen Betsy, she was a huge part of my early life and she will always remain cherished in my heart as a very dear, kind, sweet and fun soul. My most sincere condolences to all her family but in particular to Alison and Greg. Your Mom was a wonderful lady and will be very missed. - Posted by: Allison Coxworth (family friend) on: Jun 08, 2024

  • Nan, I'm heartbroken losing you. You were my last real, true family. You were there my entire life. Every holiday, long weekend, California, UMass Notre Dame, GF/Fargo hockey trips, every minute, every day, every event i can remember. We became really close after my mom passed. Your love and support was unreal. I have trouble putting into words what you did for my kids. You were amazing. The love and affection you had for them was amazing and obvious. I started talking, do you want to see the k... automatic yes. I'm lost without you. My heart is broken. Thank you Betsy, for being you. For loving me, supporting me in my darkest times. Most of all, loving my kids. Love you Jedd - Posted by: Jedd (Nephew ) on: Jun 08, 2024

  • My deepest sympathy Alison, Greg and families. Your mom and mine spent a ton of time together solving the world’s problems over coffee, walks, dinners and Community events. Betsy was always welcome in our home and in our lives. She loved her family the most and may you find some comfort in knowing this. - Posted by: Lesley Nichol (Wainikka) (Family Friend) on: Jun 08, 2024
