KEN HALLDORSON
Ken Halldorson, 85, of Willow Island in the RM of Gimli, Passes Away
Ken Halldorson, a beloved member of the Willow Island community, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2024, at the age of 85. Known for his good nature and love for the simple pleasures in life, Ken found joy in watching the sunrise over his cherished lakefront property.
Ken dedicated his life to education, serving as both a schoolteacher in many districts throughout the province and Superintendent of the Lord Selkirk School Division. His passion for teaching and his unwavering commitment to his students and effective administration left an indelible mark on countless lives. After retiring from his educational career, Ken pursued his dream job with Elections Canada, proudly serving our country as a Returning Officer and later as Field Liaison Officer in several federal elections. He was a pillar of the community, remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Born to Halldor and Sylvia, who predeceased him, Ken was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy, and their five children: Michael (Madalena), Kathy (Brent), Michelle (Warren), Thor (Liza), and Ericka (Paul). He was a proud grandfather to several grandchildren: Samantha (Cale), Jessica (Jesse), Danika, Sari, and Indi. And he recently welcomed a great-grandson, Connor Kenneth, into the family. Ken is also survived by his sisters Margret (Gary, decd.) and Doreen-Dawne (Larry), by his brothers-in-law Jerry (Wanda) and Robert (Esther), along with many nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support during this difficult time. A private service will be held to honour Ken's life. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to share a bottle of wine and drink a toast to his memory or donate to a favorite charity in his honour.
Ken's legacy of kindness, dedication, and community spirit will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Judy, Mike, Cathy, Michelle, Thor and Erica, I was saddened to learn of the passing of Ken. I remember him as both easy going and very committed to his family. He had a dry wit that always brought a smile to my face. He did love sailing. As a sailing coach I always felt incredibly supported by Ken. He and Judy were always ready to help in any way. I have so many happy memories of Ken and the Halldorson Clan. Please accept my sincere condolences and deepest sympathies. Sincerely Charlie Burns. - Posted by: Charlie Burns (Friend) on: Jul 06, 2024

I am sorry to hear of Ken’s passing. I have always respected Ken’s advice and cheerfulness. A good man to have in a neighbouring classroom. Art Ammeter - Posted by: Arthur Ernest Ammeter (Colleague at Selkirk Collegiate and LSRCSS) on: Jul 05, 2024

So sorry to hear the passing of Ken. I remember the days where he would drive all us kids from Fork River to Selkirk on the dusty roads thru the Narrows. Always fond memories of Ken. Sympathy to all the family. - Posted by: Sally Darragh (Married to my cousin) on: Jun 13, 2024

Dear Judy and Family We are so sad and sorry Ken is gone. But we are glad that, in the end, he left us peacefully, and with his gentle and kind humour intact. You both were helpful and welcoming to us when we moved to Selkirk from Leaf Rapids, over forty years ago. And you became generous neighbours when we built our house next to your own a few years later. We cherish the memories we have as our children built their own friendships with one another. Our relationship with you and Ken continued after we followed you out to Gimli, around twenty years ago. Ken helped us build our deck, enabling us to turn our new house into a fun-filled home. We especially enjoyed our long Sunday breakfasts at the Lakeview Hotel. Ken was a great boss, too. It’s never easy to maintain harmony in such a relationship, what with all the ups and downs of work life. But Ken’s honesty, integrity and human decency just seemed to make it all so natural. We know you will take comfort from your kids and their partners - together with your grandchildren - over the next, difficult while. Cheryl and I sincerely wish you well as you find your way forward. - Posted by: Terry and Cheryl Dann (Friends) on: Jun 11, 2024

I had the privilege of meeting Ken in late 1987, when I was Education Coordinator at Manitoba Youth Corrections. He was Superintendent of Lord Selkirk School Division and was involved in interviewing me for a one-year position at the Human Resource Centre. When the term ended, all parties agreed that I would be considered for a permanent position and I returned for 11 more years. During that time, I enjoyed interacting with Ken and appreciating his kindness, wisdom and sense of humour. He even tolerated the cartoons I drew of him, with captions such as, “Would you buy a used fjord from this man?”. I wish to express my condolences to his family and many friends. Ken touched so many peoples lives! It was both an honour and privilege to be able to call him Friend. Being in Ken’s presents was like opening a good book - you always learned something new through his impeccable story telling. He loved a good roasted lamb dinner and it was the carrot I would dangle to get an evening of conversation during warm fall evenings. Judy and Ken were true partners and a real team. At this moment I cannot help but smile as I recall their interactions. To my dear friend Judy “Love Always Remember” and we will make sure he will remain present in our love and stories. My condolences go out to the entire Halldorson Family with the loss of a much respected teacher of mine in Pine Falls during the late 1960s. He was very good at his chosen profession, and kept his classes interesting, which is not an easy thing to do, when teaching teenagers, who think they know everything, but the reality is very different. He also coached us in basketball and volleyball, by not only knowing the sports, but being very athletic himself, he could perform very well on the court showing us how to set up plays. I remember him looking very cool in his sweat pants and tee shirt. I am sorry we had lost many of the connections that were made in those days, but want you to know how much he meant to many of us who attended Pine Falls Collegiate. I believe that Ken's first teaching job was at Eriksdale Collegiate, and I was fortunate to be one of his students. He was a terrific teacher, caring, engaged and engaging. He led after school activities with commitment and enthusiasm - drama club in particular, where we "toured" to Ashern. He influenced my decision to become an English major. My sincere condolences to his family; such a loss. - Posted by: Karen Sidwall Adams (one of his first students) on: Jun 08, 2024

Please accept my heartfelt sympathies, Judy. Ken and I first met at United College in the late 1950s. His studiousness and insightfulness impressed me greatly then and continued to impress me during our subsequent interactions - first, as teachers and, quite some time later, as fellow administrators of school divisions. It was an honor and privilege to have known, studied with and worked with him. You and your children have every reason to be immensely proud of him! - Posted by: Keith Bricknell (Colleague) on: Jun 08, 2024

I have many fond memories of Ken when he lived at Balmoral many years ago. Have thought of him and Judy many times as time went on. My Condolences to you, Judy, and your family. Michael was just a little guy when you left Balmoral. We shared many a laugh and I will never forget your friendship and the fact that you came to Walter's funeral. I know he will be greatly missed.
