JOHN (JACK) GARNET GRAY

Peacefully on June 12, 2024, Jack passed away at the age of 96.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Diane (Peter) and Lorraine; grandson, Adam (Kristy) and great-granddaughters, Quinn and Mattie.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Marilyn, of 69 years.

Jack was born in La Riviere and loved skiing the back hills, playing hockey and riding horses. He later moved to Winnipeg where he met his future wife and started a family.

Jack enjoyed building, loved sports and was an avid curler into his 80s, but most of all he loved being with family and his many friends.

Along with the love of his life (Marilyn) Jack will be resting at Thomson “In the Park” Cemetery.

Many thanks to the kindness of the staff at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg who cared for him.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Very sorry to hear of your Dad's passing and mom and I would like to offer our condolences to you Diane and Lorraine. My fond memories of your dad, was that he was a gentle, jovial man. I don't think of the many years being in his company that he ever wore a frown. Through my Mom I heard rumors about the "Garage" in Wildwood Park, but never saw it, to me it spoke about him being engaged with his hobbies. I found it lovely to know more about Jack particularly his sports interests of skiing, horse back riding and hockey. I will have to scout around for it, but somewhere in our family pictures there is one of Jack, Gord and Bud hanging out on a rock. The Great Canadian adventures. It was a pleasure knowing your dad and he will be fondly missed. Sending love from the Lamb family. - Posted by: Cynthia Lamb/Carolyn Lamb (Friend) on: Jul 01, 2024

  • Such a lovely tribute, so beautifully written yet it must have been so very hard to write. Thank goodness I found it by Googling Uncle Jack's name. It is an Irish tradition for Johns and Jacks to be each other's nicknames. The photograph you chose was especially nice and there's his warm, friendly smile and twinkly eyes. I shall dearly miss his chuckle and all the memories he shared with me. I have saved Uncle Jack singing to me "Happy Birthday" and to think he passed away on that date is so sad. How I shall cherish every phone call and the all too very rare occasions when we met. Ninety-six years of a marvelous life and sixty-nine years married to a wonderful woman is a rare triumph. It's like the end of an era of The La Riviere Gang. So many stories: baked potatoes on hill top fires served in mugs, the afternoon he set fire to the bridge and my Mother, Nellie, blackmailing him into doing the dishes for months, all the adventures with his "kid" brother, Frank, the Brick Yard snakes and trapping gophers, Bink Moffat and his pals, trying out for the New York Rangers and, if it wasn't for a puck being shot into his ankle, he'd have played professional hockey, all the curling, all the corny jokes, all the cars and boats and the cabin by the lake, and, most important of all, the legacy he leaves in his beautiful daughters, great grand daughters and his beloved grandson. He was so really proud of you all and loved you so very much. What a wonderful man, a loving husband, a great dad, a fun grand dad, a fabulous great grandfather and the very best uncle ever. - Posted by: Ellyn June Harries (Niece) on: Jun 26, 2024
