CHRISTOPH HUBERT FINCH
With profound sadness in our hearts we announce that Christoph (Chris) passed away suddenly on June 17 at the St. Boniface Hospital.
Chris was born in 1949 in Northwestern Ontario. In his early years, he moved around until settling in Vermilion Bay, Ontario on beautiful Eagle Lake. He spent summers helping his father in his garage, swimming, fishing, and hiking in the Sunset Country area.
Although Chris became a heavy equipment mechanic, he developed his artistic ability early, excelling at drafting. Some of his first public works were posters for his cousin’s band when they were in high school.
Moving to Winnipeg with his wife Audrey in 1975, he advanced his career as a heavy equipment mechanic, working for several dealerships including Blackwood Hodge and Westcon. During this time he traveled all over Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Northwestern Ontario, always having his camera with him to capture any scenery that appealed to him. These photos later became the inspiration for his artwork. During his career, he also did technical drawings for equipment manuals, a task deserving of his drafting skills and meticulousness.
Last year Chris and Audrey celebrated 50 years of marriage. Camping, home renovations, and gardening were some of their passions. They were members of the Manitoba Orchid Society, making many lifelong friends. Chris also found many creative friends in the art community while taking classes. Some groups in which Chris was active included; Tech. Voc, Forum Arts Institute, Norman Arts Group, and the Friday Art Group. Chris won several awards at art shows for his work.
Chris was challenged by many medical issues such as MS, heart health, and cancer. He bore them all with grace. He would not let any of them slow him down or prevent him from doing anything he wanted or loved. Chris had an indomitable spirit, a very kind and loving heart, and an attitude “that anything is possible”. He could fix anything and his ideas to accomplish them were amazing and innovative. He also had a great sense of humour that he loved to share with family and friends.
Chris is survived by his loving wife Audrey, his son Ryan, daughter-in-law Danielle, grandson Marshall, and a large group of siblings, extended family, and many friends. Chris was predeceased by his father Jack H. Finch, his mother Alice, his birth mother Margaret, his brother Doug and his sister Carol.
If family and friends so desire, donations may be made in memory of Chris to the Manitoba MS Research Center, CancerCare Manitoba, or the St. Boniface Heart Foundation, as these were his favourite charities.
A celebration of Chris’ life will take place Thursday, July 18th at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Memorial tributes may be left at www.neilbardalfuneralhome.com
