Sylvia Romanchuk, aged 88, of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away peacefully on June 24, 2024, at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) in Winnipeg as a result of complications from a stroke.
She was born on August 1, 1935, to Katherine and Nicholas Nazar in Winnipeg. Aside from a short stint in Fort William, Ontario, Syliva lived her whole life in the North End of Winnipeg.
Sylvia was married to Adam Romanchuk on May 10, 1958, and they had three children, Kathy, Dan and Susan.
Sylvia joyfully worked as an educational assistant at Seven Oaks School Division for many years. This job grew out of her volunteer work and the school she worked at, RF Morrison, was conveniently located right across the street from their long-time home in Garden City. Her work at RF Morrison was an important way for her to support the Ukrainian community. She would often run into former students who would warmly greet Pani Romanchuk and mention how important she was in their lives.
Sylvia was a lifelong member of Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church. She was deeply committed to her faith. Her 50 plus years in the UCWLC, the friends she made there and the service they gave to the church were paramount in her life. Sylvia had the privilege to make communion bread for the church for many years. There were two freshly made loaves on her counter the day she became ill.
Sylvia loved socializing and connecting with people. Wherever she went, she saw someone she knew and would stop to talk and catch up. She had kind words for everyone and saw the best in every situation.
Sylvia will be lovingly missed by her husband Adam, children, Kathy, Dan (Amy) and Susan (Jason), grandchildren, Jadianne, Robyn, Josh, Jackson and Olivia. Family meant everything to Sylvia. Her niece Carolyn and her family (Ken, Carleigh and Andrea) and her nephew Michael and his family (Audrey, Chris and Jillian) were also her children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Eric.
Grammy loved her grandchildren and took pride in all their accomplishments over the years. She loved to attend the various events the children were involved in. This brought her great joy.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Irene Chomiak.
The family is eternally grateful for the care provided by the WFPS, the staff of the HSC in both the High Observation (GH7) and Clinical Assessment (GB2) Units.
Prayers will be held at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Avenue, Winnipeg, at 7:00 p.m. on July 2, 2024.
Funeral services will be on July 3, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, with the Fathers Bashutsky and Hoi officiating.
Interment will take place at Glen Eden Cemetery, with a reception to follow at Glen Eden.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Robyn Drysdale, Josh, Jackson and Olivia Romanchuk, Garrett Graham and Chris Chomiak.
Memorials or donations may be made in Sylvia’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.

I've known Adam my whole life and through him I briefly got to know his vivacious wife Sylvia. My wife (Joyce, deceased 2019) and I attended their wedding. Sylvia would occasionally send us droll and outright funny things gleaned from the internet. She had a keen eye and a wonderful sense of humour. I miss her interesting but infrequent postings. I mourn her passing. Arthur Lysionok Ottawa - Posted by: ARTHUR A LYSIONOK (Acqaintance) on: Oct 25, 2024

Dear Adam and family, My sincere and heartfelt condolences. Our sweet, loving Sylvia has come to rest. Sylvia and I were the dynamic duo in my preliminary years with the Ukrainian Kindergarten program at R.F. Morrison. We shared so many memories, laughs and untold stories. The staff would often walk across and visit with Sylvia and Adam after her retirement. We revelled in her children’s many accomplishments and then, the grandchildren. My connection with Sylvia didn’t stop there, as her dedicated role in the church, translated to her encouraging my Mother to join the Women’s League in my Mother’s retirement years, the fundraising efforts with baking, varenyky making and embroidery, along with Pani Boyachok and Pani Prokopenko. Sylvia also found time to visit my Mother at the Maples Personal Care Home. Sylvia was a kind, caring and loving spirit embraced by family, friends and respected by all and the many students whose lives she touched. Vichnaya Pamyat’. Sylvia was a long-time friend, dating back to the early 1950's when we both worked at OH&N Insurance. I was immediately drawn to her wonderful sense of humor and how friendly she was. With us both being fluent in Ukrainian, it was handy to be able to communicate in another language. Over the years, we kept in touch and ended up interacting even more through our husband's common involvement in amateur radio. She was a dear friend, and I will surely miss our conversations. - Posted by: Ruth Mills (Friend) on: Jun 29, 2024

Such a WONDERFUL lady. I will miss her greatly. As I am a volunteer at the Holy Family Home Gift Shop, Sylvia would often stop by to chat with me while there to visit her husband Adam who is a resident. - Posted by: Debra Winterburn (Friend (volunteer at Holy Family Home)) on: Jun 29, 2024
