MYRTLE RUTH MAGER

(nee HASLUND)

Our beloved Mom (Myrtle) passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of June 30, 2024, in Winnipeg, at the age of 97. Myrtle was born on the family farm in Inwood, MB on August 11, 1926, the youngest of five children to parents Eva and Marius Haslund.

Left to treasure her memory are her loving children, daughter Gloria (Myron) and son Greg (Pat), devoted nieces and nephews, their very special next generation families, extended family, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Eric in 1998, her parents, Eva and Marius, brothers, Robert (Rachel) Haslund, Ewald (Marguerite) Haslund, and sisters, Mildred (Evert) Johnson and Lillian (Ole) Torske.

There were many stories shared over the years of her early life growing up in Inwood with her two brothers and two sisters. Her family’s Danish heritage was always very special to her. She shared stories of attending the one room Monar School, horseback riding across the lake front, reading by coal oil lamp, getting around in winter by horse and sleigh, listening to old time radio, country dances, singing and playing guitar. She was amazed how things changed throughout her life. After leaving school at age 16, Myrtle moved on her own to Winnipeg where she worked in retail for Gaults Ltd., Zellers, and Eaton’s mail order.

Through a chance introduction by her brother Wally, Myrtle met her future husband Eric, whom she married on November 6, 1948. After marriage, they moved to Inwood to operate a BA Service Station for many years in town where Myrtle opened a small lunchroom/café as part of the business. She was well known in the area for her homemade burgers and delicious pies. As an active member of the Inwood WI, Myrtle worked at all the teas and fall suppers every year. She was also a supporting member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Inwood.

Myrtle liked curling, winning many country bonspiels and continued to follow curling highlights throughout her life on TV. She enjoyed country music and being able to sing and play guitar with her sisters, which was always fun and entertaining. A bus tour to Nashville together was a real highlight. Throughout the years, Myrtle was able to travel extensively with her family throughout Canada and the US, with many adventures and memories made along the miles.

Myrtle enjoyed living independently in her home until moving to Winnipeg to be closer to the care and support of her family. Our Mom was special and loved her family. Her daughter and son were the focus of her life. She will be remembered as being a devoted and loving mother, always proud and supportive of her children.

Funeral service to honour Myrtle’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall, MB. A private interment will be held on a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Myrtle’s memory to the Inwood Cemetery, Box 84, Inwood, MB R0C 1P0.

Rest in peace, remembered with love.
