GLADYS LORAINE MILDREN

June 16, 1928 - June 30, 2024

Gladys Loraine Mildren gently passed away the morning of June 30, 2024, after a three month stay at St. Boniface Hospital. She has joined her beloved husband Walter, daughter Jan, son-in-law John Connor, brother George Shutler, mother Christine Shutler (Jonsson) and father George Shutler. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Gail, grandson Scott Walker, son-in-law Fred Cross and her many friends.

Gladys was born June 16, 1928, in Winnipeg, and lived in Winnipeg all her life. After graduating from Gordon Bell High School, she worked for the Telephone System for a year. She then attended Success Business College and, after graduating as a stenographer, worked at Air Craft Services (Western) Ltd. She met Walter at a church dance, and they were married at St. Matthew's Anglican Church in 1949. Walter described Gladys, as “the center of his world”, and they were blessed with 73 wonderful years together. She loved and enthusiastically supported Walter in his career as a civil engineer and in all his many and varied ventures. They travelled to so many places around the world together, and made friends everywhere they went. Even language was no barrier to friendship for Gladys.

Gladys was the beating heart of her family. She loved daughters Gail and Jan, and actively supported them in every endeavour. She always believed there was nothing her girls couldn't do. During their school years, Gladys participated in parent councils, volunteered whenever work was to be done and attended or worked at every school concert and event. Once their school years were over, she attended every concert, recital, performance, production and event. She dearly loved, supported and was so very proud of her grandson Scott.

Gladys also loved animals, music, dancing, reading, gardening, knitting, sewing and embroidery, bowling (with the River Heights Ladies' Bowling League), playing bridge and having tea - or sherry - with her many friends. In 1958, Walter built the cottage at Victoria Beach, and Gladys spent many happy summers there, organizing the weekly bridge night for many years, relaxing on the beach and, of course, making friends.

Gladys was a woman with a deep, quiet faith. In early years, she was very active at St. Matthew's Anglican Church, teaching Sunday School, serving on Vestry and on various committees and in a much-loved sewing group, making lifelong friends. Later, she shared her time between her daughters' churches - St. Luke's Anglican and St. Andrew's United - again making treasured friends. After the death of her beloved daughter, Jan, she regularly attended St. Luke's for as long as she was able.

All her life, Gladys touched so many hearts. Age was never a barrier to friendship. Her children's friends became her friends; and the children of her friends also became her friends. Visiting Dad at Riverview Health Centre she would be greeted with cries of “Hi, Mama”, and even in her last days at St. Boniface Hospital she became “Granny Gladys” to a neighbouring patient's family. Gladys greatly appreciated the care provided by the staff of 4E Family Medicine at St. Boniface Hospital.

Mum had a sweet nature, a generous and loving heart and an impish sense of humour which drew people - of all ages - to her all her life. She was loved, and will be missed, by so many.

A service will be held at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 130 Nassau Street North, on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to St. Luke's Anglican Church, any no-kill animal shelter, the Winnipeg Humane Society or to the charity of your choice.

Love you forever, Mum.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Gail - so sorry for your loss. Our deepest condolences. - Posted by: Patti Simko (Friend) on: Jul 13, 2024

  • Gladys was my mother's best friend and I grew up with her and all the Mildren family. My earliest memories was teaching Sunday school with her at St. Matthew's church and singing in the choir with her daughters. We would go for lunch and shop together with my Mother. I will always have wonderful memories. Our condolences to all the family. - Posted by: Shelley Byrne(Walker) and Kevin Byrne (Friends) on: Jul 07, 2024
