FRANK LAWRENCE

Change of Service Time

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Frank Lawrence, on July 3, 2024, at the age of 95.

Frank is survived by his wife Marina, his five children: Peter (Susan), Rena (Dave), Annalee (Rob), Gretchen (Dale), Paul (Charissa), as well as 15 grandchildren: Gemma and Mark; Alexander, Sara, and Josh; Christopher, Matthew, and Ben; Daniel, Emma, and Noah; Alicia, Alex, Isaac, and Jonah. He was predeceased by his parents, Stella and Frank Zasadinski, his sister Phyllis, his brother Eddie, brothers in-law Roman and Wally Gerwing, sister-in-law Viola Gerwing, and his in-laws, Ewald and Irene Gerwing.

Frank was born on May 10, 1929. He grew up on Manitoba and Flora Avenue and was very proud of his North End roots. Dad attended St. John’s High School and then entered Law School several years later, obtaining his Law Degree in 1959. To pay for his tuition, he worked on an oil tanker in South America with his brother Eddie. Law remained a life-long passion well beyond his retirement at the age of 88.

It was in his last year of Law School that he met his wife, Marina Gerwing. Mom and Dad met at a St. Valentine Dance in 1959. They were married one year later April 21, 1960, at St. Anthony’s Parish in West Kildonan. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary together.

Our Dad was a man of few words yet possessed profound wisdom and an unwavering faith. He had a passion for history, literature, and philosophy, and could always be found with a book in his hand, most notably anything by Charles Dickens. He appreciated the simple things in life and found much joy in his routines; going for coffee, a drive in the country and visits from his family. Despite a difficult childhood, Dad overcame these obstacles to create a life filled with gratitude and appreciation.

We all love you Dad, and will forever cherish the love, guidance, and memories we shared.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations go to the Alphonse Gerwing Foundation at http://thealgerwingfoundation.com/ .

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish, 264 Donwood Drive.
