Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDON HOYE
After a brief battle with illness, Don passed away peacefully on July 1, 2024, with his wife Donna by his side.
Don was a loving husband, father, grandpa, Papa Don, friend, and so much more to those who knew him. Don treasured his family and so it was important to him to be there to celebrate, cheer them on or just spend time together.
Don was driven by curiosity, had a unique sense of humour, and became a self-taught jack of all trades, master of many.
He was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy and William Hoye, aunt Florence Hoye, sister Diane Oystrek, late wife Sheila Hoye, mothers-in-law Ida Williamson and Josephine Elliott, father-in-law Bob Elliott, and brothers-in-law Ted Purvis and Ross Williamson.
Don is survived by his wife Donna, children Bree Hoye (Vlad Snovida), Bryce Hoye (Sam MacKinnon), Sherene Smoluk (Brad), Sharlene Yarish (Larry), Rayna Debow and many special relatives. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Bethany (Curt), Jesiah (Chanelle), Trinity (Colin), Riley (Rachel), Mackenzie (Halle), Nick (Alana), Lyric (Ryan), Zara (Josh), Blake and Lila, as well as great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Abby, Halle, Brielle, Espey, Genesis, Cillian, Bella, Willow, and Declan.
Don was born and raised in West Kildonan where he met his best friend Ric Liewicki who he had many adventures with, including the Kenora Bass International. Growing up, Don spent his summers at the Hoye and Baker family cottages in Matlock and Delta Beach. When his children were young, he moved to the Maples where he spent the next 30 years.
Don started working at Brooks Equipment when he was 18 and was a dedicated employee for over 25 years. He went on to work for Marr’s Leisure, Doyle’s Supply, and retired at the North West Company, in the same building where he began his working career with Brooks, decades earlier.
In 1976, at the age of 25, he purchased a tree-covered lot on War Eagle Lake in western Ontario. Together with family and friends, he cleared the land and built the cottage, which he referred to as his “piece of paradise.” In the 1990s, after he and Donna married and the family grew, he built a guest cottage, again with the help of loved ones.
The lake has been a gathering place for loved ones, where he formed many special memories, friendships and a lake family. Most mornings at the lake began with Howard, solving world issues over a cup of coffee.
Don took great joy in spending hours on the water teaching people how to fish and showing them the beauty of the lake through his eyes.
He was known as a helper, Mr. Fix-It, the king of make-work projects, a putterer, and a passionate caretaker of the lake ecosystem. The lake was a gift that he loved, and to share it with everyone brought him the greatest joy.
In his final years, Don and Donna moved to Selkirk, where he found a whole community of friends in his new neighbourhood and through his walks and drives with his dogs.
His family is grateful for the warmth and care he received at HSC. Thank you to the staff on unit GD5.
A celebration of life will take place on July 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home at 309 Eveline St., Selkirk. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed via the link on his obituary on Gilbart's website.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.

Even though I only had the opportunity to meet Don on a couple of occasions, the one truly enjoyable time was a fishing trip with his best friend Ric. There is no doubt he has been sorely missed since his passing. My sincere condolences to his family and best friend Ric. Don - Posted by: Don Clough (Friend) on: Jul 03, 2025

Donna and family, We were so saddened to hear of Don’s passing. We remember him as a kind, gentle soul who was so proud of his family and always spoke of all of you whenever we saw him. We visited once at War Eagle on our way to our cabin and he was so happy to give us a ride around the lake. We say co-workers from Brooks Equipment, but we were all really more like family. A great place to have worked. He always had a smile and was always willing to help anyone at work. Don was taken too soon but he will never be forgotten. We were so lucky to have known him! - Posted by: Irene and George (Co-workers at Brooks Equipment ) on: Aug 17, 2024

We were very lucky to have Don and Donna as neighbors and they made us feel very welcome when we bought our cottage on the lake. We would hear Don and Howard go back and forth on their quads each morning for coffee get togethers. Don would stop by and talk with Greg and we would see them at the barbeques held each year. Our thoughts and prayers for the family, as we know Don will be greatly missed! Xoxo Pam and Greg - Posted by: Pam Durston and Greg Ziemanski (Friends from War Eagle Lake) on: Jul 07, 2024

Our deepest condolences to the Hoye family for your loss. As at 50 year family at War Eagle lake we can understand all too well the fierce love Don had for our amazing lake and how much it meant to him to share it with family and friends through the years. Over the years, our late father Doug always enjoyed some good banter with “Hoye” out on the lake. Shortly after our father passed away, us siblings were out on the pontoon floating in a quiet bay when Don simply drove by in his little fishing boat, likely knowing we were reflecting about our Dad, and respectfully raised a beer to us and yelled, to "Dougie"! We all remember that being so perfecting timed and so uplifting! May your many wonderful memories comfort you and may Don’s love for War Eagle continue in his legacy. “To Hoye” and a life well lived! With deepest sympathy from the McElrea family. - Posted by: The McElrea Family (Lake friends) on: Jul 06, 2024

My sincere condolences to Donna and family on your loss. Don was such a great guy and always so helpful to neighbors and friends. When we were all building out cottages at War Eagle Lake in the mid 70’s, when Don and Sheila arrived at the lake, followed by Larry and Susan and then my husband Tony and I, we would get together for a drink to start off our weekend of building our cottages. What a great time we had in those days with young kids and great ambitions. RIP my friend. - Posted by: Sue Heim (Friend) on: Jul 06, 2024
