WILLIAM HERBERT CHANIN

(HERB)

August 5, 1923 - June 27, 2024

William Herbert Chanin passed away at the age of 100 on June 27, 2024, in Concordia Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was predeceased by his wife Muriel Eloise (Burbidge) Chanin. He is survived by five children, Gary (Margaret), Robert, Barbara (Merle), Craig, Pamela (Matti). He also had nine grandchildren, Lee (Shannon), Rebecca (Chris), Adam (Samantha), Scott (Candice), Christopher, Stephanie (Stefano), Alex (Katherine), Anders (Carol), Madeline (Gary), and 11 great-grandchildren, Hannah, Harrison, Gavin, Aurelia, Kaden, Ryden, Cohen, Mattia, Aleksi, Nora, Maya. He is survived by his brother Allan and his sister-in-law Willa. He was predeceased by his sisters Edyth (Norm) and Alice (Elmer), brother Kieth, and his sister-in-law Ceci. They and his nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends in the community will miss him dearly.

Herb was born to Samuel and Gladys (Elliot) Chanin. He grew up in Stonewall, Manitoba where he developed his love of the outdoors. After graduating in the spring of 1942, Herb enlisted in the Canadian Forces. Second World War brought Herb to the east coast of Canada, when he joined the Royal Canadian Airforce 162 BR Squadron. It was here he met Muriel in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Herb was posted in Reykjavik, Iceland. The RCAF patrolled the North Atlantic with Canso aircraft.

Upon returning to Canada, Herb proposed to Muriel, and they were married on September 14, 1946, in Muriel’s hometown of Canning, Nova Scotia. They moved to Toronto with General Motors, started a family, later settling in Winnipeg. They became founding members of Silver Heights United Church. Herb eventually opened his own recreational vehicle business, The Campers Trailer Warehouse.

Muriel passed away on February 17, 1998, at the age of 75. After the children moved away, the community became ever more important in Herb’s life. He enjoyed socializing at the Salsbury House Restaurant and San Vito Coffee Shop. Herb lived to the age of 100 in the family home (on honorarily named “Herb Chanin Way”) for 70 years.

The family is very grateful to all who were there for Herb as an extended family.

The family would also like to express thanks to the staff of Grace Hospital, Seven Oaks General Hospital, Misericordia Community Hospital and Concordia Hospital for the wonderful care Herb received.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Herb was truly the Emperor of the Salisbury House (now closed) on Ellice Ave. across from The Highlander. Herb was the epitome of a Highlander. Had many coffees with Herb and other Sals royalty including Mr. Brown (a retired Revenue Canada enforcer & Henry Fonda doppelganger), John Kreviazuk, immortal curler Fred Lay and so many more. I revered them all as coffee shop companions + look forward to my next trip down 'Herb Chanin Way'. - Posted by: Morris J Bay (Company of Poets) (Salisbury Friend) on: Nov 11, 2024

  • I remember all the good times when Herb and his son Gary came to visit me. We spoke about the good old days and always had a great time together. I will always cherish those memories. My deepest sympathy to the family. Love from Jim Holloway - Posted by: Jim Holloway (Friend) on: Jul 16, 2024

  • Dear Barb and family, Looking at the photo of your dad in Saturday's newspaper reminded me both of our childhood, and that I knew him most of my life! I read with great interest the story of "Herb Chanin Way", certain it would have been a great thrill for your dad. I would like to offer my deepest condolences to all of the family as you gather together to both celebrate and mourn. - Posted by: Margo Laing (family friend) on: Jul 07, 2024
