Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLARRY LYNN VANDERHYDE
It is with profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Larry Vanderhyde, at home, on July 6, 2024, with family by his side.
Larry’s loving children include Todd and Alanna Vanderhyde in Winnipeg, Teri Bristol in Jacksonville, FL, Troy Vanderhyde in Dallas, TX, Tony Vanderhyde in Phoenix, AZ, and Tim and Shiela Vanderhyde in Winnipeg. Larry was also a proud grandfather to Ashley, Alex, Tyler, Cassidy, Brittany, Brianne, Dustin and Connor. Larry was also a proud great-grandfather to Charlie and Madeline, who he had visited with just weeks prior to his passing.
Larry was born in Owatonna, Minnesota on January 31, 1936. He attended High School in Kenyon where he met his wife Charlain and fell in love. As Larry was a Staff Sergeant in the US Army, they were married on March 31, 1956, in Waukegan, Illinois, and the next day Larry was deployed to Korea for 16 months. After returning back to the United States, they enjoyed 63 years of love, fishing and wonderful times, not in that order.
Larry was predeceased by Charlain on July 6, 2019, exactly five years to the day of her passing. Larry was predeceased by his brothers, Tom and Don Vanderhyde, and his sister Patricia Marcotte.
Larry is fondly remembered for his love of family and friends, his amazing abilities competing at the world duck carving competition, and judging local competitions providing guidance to others. Larry’s love for fishing and hunting was evident every year as he caught countless walleye and made the trip out to Melita every summer.
Dad, nothing can express the sadness of your passing. We love you unconditionally and are comforted knowing that you are now with mom.
Service will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 10:00 a.m. at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy.

My deepest sympathy goes to the Families. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal. Larry was a very thoughtful and caring man. Have many memories of Larry and Charlene. - Posted by: Florence Smith (Friend) on: Jul 12, 2024

Larry Vanderhyde Remembered Larry Vanderhyde nurtured and advanced the interests of the waterfowl carving community in Manitoba for over 30 years. Larry took up bird carving while working at Jostens in Winnipeg as a way to decompress from the demands of the workplace. A naturally gifted craftsman, he quickly became an accomplished decorative duck carver, amassing a number of best of show awards. Generous by nature and having formed a kinship with the carving community he joined the ranks of Prairie Canada Carvers’ Association during its formative years. Drawing on his business acumen and leadership skills he served as competition rules chairperson for 12 years helping the competition to grow and become a major North America carving event. Following that he served 18 years as a competition waterfowl judge, bringing into play his skill as an established carver and extensive knowledge of waterfowl form and function. Competition carvers highly valued his thoughtful and inspiring critiques, attributing his help for their advancement. He brought the same level of commitment to judging entries at the Oak Hammock Marsh Guild Decoy Carving Competition (lasting a similiar amount of time). He also judged birds at the Reflections of Nature Competition in Saskatoon. Bob Lavender of Saskatoon echoed the sentiment of scores of carvers when he said “What distinguishes Larry as a mentor is his ability to encourage and motive you to do better while offering helpful and thorough advice. His enthusiasm and love for carving is infectious”. Fittingly in 2015 Larry was awarded the Prairie Canada Carvers Award of Excellence for his dedication in promoting and engendering the art of bird carving in western Canada. His contributions are also recognized by a Larry Vanderhye cocktail carving purchase award offered annually by the Oak Hammock Marsh Carving Guild. His accomplishments were highlighted in a feature profile article in the 2012 issue of Competition magazine. His carving legacy also lives on with his life-sized pattern of a preening mallard drake that was printed in the 25th Anniversary Prairie Canada Carvers Pattern Book. Prairie Canada members who donated a carving towards the annual competition raffle are proud owners of a Prairie Canada ring designed by Larry. He is missed by all who knew him.
