Hugh was born, June 8, 1935, in his family’s current South Brandon home, to parents, Leslie and Aletha Jameson (nee Gerrand). He started his education at South Brandon School. In 1955, Hugh attended Brandon’s School of Agriculture where he completed a diploma course in Agriculture.

Hugh had a very active childhood within the community, being one of the first members of the South Brandon 4-H Beef Club and working alongside his father on their farm. Hugh regaled fond memories of days riding or driving horses to school, for farm work, gathering friends for a skate on the creek, or traveling to dances.

In 1960, Hugh married Martha Klopan of Gladstone, Manitoba at Little Souris Church. It was at this time, Hugh’s parents moved from the farm for Lauder, Manitoba. Hugh and Martha then purchased the farm and then also raised their four sons proudly within the farming community.

Hugh grew his farm through the years, to include dairy cattle, beef cattle, grain and pastureland and other homesteads to build and support his boys shared interests in farming. In later years, with his adult sons, they continued growth together, and added a 20,000 bird, poultry egg layer operation. Hughie always encouraged his boys in expansion and diversification to keep up with farming’s difficult economy.

Hughie’s dedication to farming also translated to a lifetime of service. From early years, his pride and devotion were shown through the 4-H program as member, grand champion showman, judge at Toronto Royal Winter Fair and 4-H leader in the South Brandon District

Hugh served for ten years on the Manitoba Milk Producers Board, acting as Finance Chair for four years. He also served on the Transportation and Promotion Committees. He represented Manitoba at the Annual Policy Conferences held by the Dairy Farmers of Canada. Hugh was a strong supporter of supply management and attended conferences across Canada representing Manitoba.

Locally, Hugh has actively supported the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba for over 30 years, serving on the Board of Directors for 21 years. He was President from 1984-1986. He served as Chairman of Manitoba Livestock Expo; the province’s largest livestock show as well as chairing the Livestock Section of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. As chairman of the Heritage Committee his organizational skills brought about the successful celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Provincial Exhibition during the 2006 Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. Also, as director on the Brandon Keystone Centre Board, he was a major influence in the expansion of the Keystone Centre in the early 1990s. And in his golden years, was so very proud of the restoration of the historic Dome building and actively participated in the campaign and fundraising to give the Provincial Exhibition Offices a beautiful new home to plan and develop fairs for the next generations to enjoy.

Hugh served as a counsellor on the Farm Debt Review Board for 12 years where his insight, experience and common-sense approach benefited many farmers from across Manitoba who were in financial difficulties. He served on the Board of the Manitoba Holstein Association for five years, two years as President. Hugh also chaired the Cornwallis Municipality’s 100th Anniversary Committee in 1984.

In recognition of Hugh’s vision, his love of agriculture and his dedication to community betterment, Hugh was inducted to the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2016.

In 2022, Hugh and his family were presented with the BMO Manitoba Farm Family Award at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
