LILLIAN MAE MATTHEWS
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lillian Mae Matthews at the age of 96. Mae passed away peacefully at Betel Home Foundation in Gimli, MB on July 5, 2024.
She was born and raised in Summerside, PEI where she met Wallace E. Matthews who she married in 1950. Wally was in the R.C.A.F. so they were stationed in Summerside, PEI; Trenton, ON; Winnipeg, MB; Senneterre, QC; Ottawa, ON and finally Gimli, MB. Her passion was in the nursing profession and no matter where they were stationed she followed her passion retiring from Johnson Memorial Hospital as Director of Nursing. She volunteered with Girl Guides, 4-H and Gimli W.I. to name a few. She loved curling, cross-country skiing, quilting, gardening and was always there when anyone needed a hand.
She was predeceased by her husband Wally and siblings, Frank, Duane and Gordon Best. She leaves behind her brother Herbert Best, her children, Allan (Loretta) Matthews, Suzanne Patrick, Perry (Brenda) Matthews and David Matthews. Also her grandchildren, Randi (Kerry Hill) Turnbull, Eric (Kristin) Matthews, Angela (Ryan Leaitch) Matthews, William (Kathryn Coleman) Matthews, Zac (Sara Kyle) Matthews, Kristi Adair-Stebanuk, Kevin and Philip Matthews; her great-grandkids, Caleb and Ivy Turnbull-Schnerch, Harrison Matthews and Sophie Matthews and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and their families who can be found coast to coast.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Gimli Betel Homes for their outstanding care and compassion shown to Mae during her stay with them.
In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation to Heart & Stroke Foundation, CancerCare or the Legion on her behalf.
In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place and a private family service will be at a later date.
