Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORMA JOYCE HANLEY
Norma passed away peacefully on July 2, 2024, at the age of 99 leaving one daughter Brenda and one son Bob. Another son and daughter, Douglas and Caryn, passed away at the ages of 52 and 16.
Norma was passionate about including her children in a full life. She put a lot of attention toward finding support systems for the raising of her two youngest children born with Downs Syndrome. She developed a wealth of associations and friendships over the years. Norma naturally attracted many friends from her church and from her school-teaching career, which she loved. Norma’s strength and confidence regarding Douglas and Caryn came, in large measure, from her connection with her big extended family.
The arrivals of Doug and Caryn started a massive learning curve for Norma. With the help of many in the caregiving community, she set an inspiring example for anyone looking to enhance the lives of the handicapped. She seemed to find courage and resilience by noticing those qualities in other people. Norma was caring, giving, generous and interested in any person in front of her. She always seemed to recognize the greatness of others.
Very important to Norma were all the members of her family of brothers and sisters. She was born August 11, 1924, seventh among the nine children of Alfred and Christena Fulford. She lived near Mather, Manitoba until the age of 10, then moved with her close-knit, eleven-member clan to Minitonas in 1934, where she grew up as a farm girl. Her family coped with the Great Depression together, learning to support each other in adversity. All of them actively continued positive approaches to life until the end of it. Norma grew into this as a child.
Norma married Donald Hanley in 1945 in Minitonas on his return from the Second World War in Europe. In 1953 they moved to Winnipeg. They were a very good team together until his death in 1997. Norma later moved to Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence, and lived there for ten years. With the help of daughter Brenda, she participated in every activity available. As Norma began to need more care she moved to Golden West Centennial Lodge where a brilliant staff understood her needs and eased her burdens with good humour, respect, energy and thoughtfulness. The nurses and staff loved Norma and called her “Teacher.”
Norma was predeceased by her eight siblings. She is fondly remembered by nephews, nieces, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, students and friends.
A memorial service for Norma will take place Monday, July 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Prairie Spirit United Church, 207 Thompson Drive.

Norma was my mentor teacher when I taught at Crestview School from 1971 to 1978. I had just got my first teaching job and if it wasn't for Norma and her guidance I would have not become the teacher I became. She was not only a wonderful mentor but we became great friends. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and a teacher. I was always thankful to have Norma as a friend. My sincere condolences to her family. - Posted by: Wendy Smeaton (Friend) on: Jul 14, 2024

I met Norma in the fall of 1984 at Strathmillan School. She taught grade 4 and I was the French specialist. We drew each other’s name for secret friend that year. Norma was warm and friendly, and we had good chats. We shared info about our respective United Churches, and after Deer Lodge closed, she came to what was then Sturgeon Creek United. Norma took some training to be a colour consultant, and did my colours, my Mum’s, and my friend Helga’s. I still have my book of colour swatches…autumn! Norma did good stuff with her students, and was well-respected. Her retirement event, held at the school, was very nice. It was always a pleasure to run into Norma in the community after she retired. My condolences to her family. - Posted by: Cathie Morgan Matula (Colleague from Strathmillan School) on: Jul 13, 2024

I was one of Caryn and Doug’s teachers at Kirkfield Park School and always admired Mrs. Hanley’s pragmatism of her children. She was right there if any incident occurred (thinking of Caryn). My condolences to your family. - Posted by: Rose Kwiatkowski (Teacher ) on: Jul 13, 2024
