JOHN (DAVID) MALCOLM GEORGE

March 31, 1945 - July 8, 2024

We are sad to say a final goodbye to our beloved David, who passed away at St. Boniface Hospital after a year long struggle with cancer.

David is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife Margaret; daughter Bobbie (Curtis): and their family, Tyson, Trinity, Cohen, Rebecca, and Alex; son Matthew; stepdaughter Amber (Steven) and their family: Gwyneth (Taha), Jasper, Chloe, Jocilyn, and Madison; stepson Nick; former daughter-in-law Brenda, and their son, Jaxon; and dear friends, George and Jennifer.

David was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Laura George (he was their only child); and by many aunts and uncles. Also, Lila White, his long-suffering office manager who worked with him for some 30 years!

David was born in Belleville, ON. The family then moved to Calgary, AB. and then to Winnipeg where they settled in Transcona. They joined the United Church which became a major part of the family's social and spiritual life.

David contracted polio in the 1950s epidemic. He was fortunate to recover but he suffered after effects of the disease later in his life.

David was educated in Transcona from the 1st to 12th grades. At the time of his passing he still had friends and acquaintances from his school years. They loved to reminisce about their former teachers and classmates and the early years of Transcona. After graduating high school, David worked at the TD Bank in Kenora for a while to earn money for his university tuition. He also worked at his uncle's grocery store in Saskatchewan near Kenosee Lake where the uncle had a cottage and David spent many pleasurable weekends with his parents and relatives.

He attended the University of Winnipeg for his undergraduate degree, then the University of Manitoba, graduating with a law degree in 1972.

David eventually established his own law office in Transcona on Regent Avenue East. He was joined by his associate Michael Green, they worked (and played) together for many years.

During these earlier years of working, David began his family. First Bobbie, then Matthew came along. He was a loving, caring, and patient dad. Bobbie recalls David had a unique bird call, a loon sound, that he was proud to use at any and all performances. Anytime he was part of an audience, when the audience applauded, the loon was heard! The kids knew Dad was there!

David enjoyed practicing law. He was personable, loved meeting his steady stream of clients. He would often go the extra mile to help them. He also worked with various groups such as the Rotary club which helps many causes including working to eradicate polio. He also worked with the Transcona Museum board, Keep Them in School foundation, volunteer driving with the Transcona Seniors Council, delivering Christmas hampers, helped the Food Bank, and contributed generously to organizations helping homeless and struggling persons. He was active in his church, working in various positions and he loved being a member of the choir. So much so that he also joined the Winnipeg Men's choir. This unfortunately was cut short due to declining health.

Other sources of enjoyment were reading, family dinners and gatherings, playing piano, perusing Facebook to keep up with community happenings, and his great love - playing golf. He was a member at Elmhurst. He and his friend George could be found golfing all season long right until the club shut down for the winter!

When David was approaching retirement age, he wasn't quite ready to let it go, so he closed his office and was able to join with colleague William Tweed. The firm George and Tweed was formed. David very much enjoyed working with Bill, a friendship was begun and even after David and Bill both retired, they met weekly at L'arche Tova Cafe for lunch together.

Also, after retirement, David and Margaret were fortunate to travel during the golf off seasons. They visited many exciting and interesting places in the world. And there was a memorable train trip to the west coast and back, with a cruise to Alaska thrown in.

David lived a full life. He was honored to have a street in Transcona named after him.

When cancer began to take its toll, life became a struggle. Endless medical appointments and trips to the hospital, some by ambulance. Thank you to the paramedics and members of the Winnipeg Fire Service for your wonderful assistance.

He appreciated the concern and warmth of the medical and support staff at CancerCare. Thank you. And thank you to the staff of St. Boniface Hospital for all the kindness, care, and support during his final days.

Thank you, Bill, Reg, George, and Jennifer for your visits with David. He appreciated your friendship more than he could express.

As per David's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. A family celebration of David's life will take place at a later date.

The family expresses gratitude to Ethical Death Care for their touching photo-biography video honouring David's life, accessible through the 'tributes' link at the bottom of this obituary.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • So sorry to hear about David's passing. I met David 30 years ago - he was very good friends with my boss (Ben Clarke). Many good times with lots of laughter and memories were made. He helped me out of a few pickles at times - always a generous and kind soul. You will be missed. Hope you and Ben are reunited. RIP. - Posted by: Heather Zajac (Friend) on: Jul 18, 2024

  • David and our brother, Harry (Harm Smid) became friends at the Central school in Transcona in the fifties. They spent fun time together because George had no siblings and Harm had 5 sisters. Besides Mrs. George liked his Dutch accent. Eventually David became the lawyer for our parents and later he married our sister, Margaret. That gave us the opportunity to get to know David better. He was a dear brother- in-law and will sure be missed. He loved being in the choir and liked to remember their trip to Holland where the lady, where he was billeted, cleaned and shined his shoes for him. - Posted by: Audrey vaags (Sister-in-law) on: Jul 14, 2024
