JOHN RONALD SANDER

January 10, 1934 - July 11, 2024

Peacefully in his sleep, John Ronald Sander, age 90, died on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

He is survived by two of his children, Linda and Carol; daughter-in-law Jill (Ian); his grandchildren, Laura (JD), Sarah (Stuart), Scott (Amanda), Sean, Kristin (Chris), Amy, and Anna; and his honorary grandchildren, Holly (Jerome), Lin, and Pin. In recent years, his greatest joy came from seeing his great-grandchildren, Brooke, Madison, Michael, and Liam (either in person or on video). He is also survived by his sisters, Josie and Elsa as well as his brother Norval.

John was born on January 10, 1934, to Mari and Kolbjorn Sander - immigrants from Norway who lived on a family farm in Faulkner. Kolbjorn was a carpenter who built the homestead, while Mari enjoyed caring for the animals and taught John how to farm. John attended Wooddale School in the area with his four brothers and sisters. Stories were told of the long trek to school either by foot or with the slow old mare. John stopped attending school in grade 8 to help on the farm and a few years later, he began his first business selling suits and men’s clothing. This eventually morphed into John Sander Sales, where he kept local farmers supplied with tires, oil, and farm implements.

In 1971 John married Marjorie, a city girl up for the challenge of country life. Glen and Linda were part of the package deal and Carol and Bruce soon followed. Many happy memories were made on the family farm as John and Marjorie wove family, community, and music together. The home was loud and busy but welcoming to all. John would help anyone and was kind and generous to a fault.

After the death of Marjorie in 2005, John continued to live on the farm, running his business and watching sports on TV from his favourite chair. He remained on the farm until the age of 87, when he was moved to the city by his daughters (much to his annoyance).

John was predeceased by his wife Marjorie (2005), his sons, Glen (2019) and Bruce John (1997), son-in-law Robin (2020), as well as his older brother and best friend Art (2022).

Dad was a kind and gentle soul who never wanted to be a bother to anyone. He never denied his children anything, even if it meant working long hours into the night. His greatest joys in life were the children in his life, right up to the very end.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, in the Faulkner Community Hall with Dawn Tober officiating. Interment will be held in the Faulkner Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to the Faulkner Community Club, PO Box 4, Faulkner, MB R0C 0Y0.
