LENA JOHNSTON WARREN

June 21, 1924 - June 18, 2024

Peacefully at Charleswood Care Centre, with family at her side, Lena passed away on June 18, 2024, three days before her 100th birthday.

Lena will be dearly missed by her daughter Roma, son Gordon, son-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Lena was predeceased by husband James Young, husband Ted (Tud) Warren, daughter Avril, son-in-law Dallas, sisters, Pearl, Jessie and Ann.

Lena was born in Cambuslang, Glasgow, Scotland to parents Thomas and Selina Clark. She came to Winnipeg as a war bride in 1946 to start her new life and married Ted on April 5, 1947. They shared 60 wonderful years of marriage and raised their three children on Davidson Street. Lena was a stay-at-home mum and helped with babysitting many neighborhood children along with her grandchildren. Family was most important to her and she showed it in every way possible. Lena had a love of shopping and the family were weekly visitors to Unicity and Polo Park Malls. Lena loved to walk to the grocery store and she enjoyed Sunday visits to the Assiniboine Park Zoo where the family spent hours walking and talking to the animals. She enjoyed summers in her back yard with family BBQs and weekend family gatherings throughout the year. At age 97 she moved to the Charleswood Care Centre.

We all love you mum and will forever cherish the love, guidance, and memories we share. We miss you.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society at Alzheimer.mb.ca.

Thank you to the wonderful and compassionate staff at the Charleswood Care Centre for their care during Lena’s stay for the past three years.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My grandma was one of a kind. I will always remember our Saturday visits in her backyard. Grandma always had the best treats and would often find new ones at the store. She was a great hostess along with being the life of every party. I can still see her coming out the back door with her tray stacked up with drinks and snacks, never spilling anything. I remember how excited we would be when she came over for a birthday dinner or to visit us for the day at Caddy Lake. Her energy always made for a good time and you always had to be ready for her quick whit. She was game for anything, even the rides at the Ex when she was in her 80s. Going anywhere with Grandma was like being with a celebrity. Everyone knew her and always stopped to talk. I loved hearing her talk about her life in Scotland and travelling to Canada after the war. Ella also was able to enjoy her visits with Great Granny which she loved. She always enjoyed when Granny would let her look around her house to see her nice ornaments and decor or to help her bring the tray of goodies outside. Grandma was one of a kind and we will miss our chats but feel incredibly lucky to have had her in our lives for such a long time. - Posted by: Kyla (Granddaughter ) on: Jul 22, 2024

  • I met Lena and her daughter Roma while working at Safeway, they would come in faithfully every Saturday and I would look forward to helping them find the perfect deserts. We shared many fun times and when the store closed I felt a great loss at not being able to see them anymore. Please except my heart felt sorry at the loss of your mother she was a ray of sunshine with a great sense of humour. - Posted by: Joann Drabyk (Friend from Safeway Bakery) on: Jul 20, 2024
