On July 16, 2024 at the age of 100 years, with her family by her side, Lydia Krueger peacefully left this world to be with the Lord.
She leaves to cherish her memory son Mark (Twylla), grandchildren, Luke and Matthew, sister Johanna Sontag (Franz) and sister-in-law Waltraud Kuzicz (both in Germany), and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Ray, parents, Juliane and Philipp, sisters, Helen Yurkowski, Nadia Klingzahn and Maria Kusitsch and brother Andreas Kuzicz.
Lydia was born on June 12, 1924 in Niewir, Poland. After the war, Lydia and two of her sisters, Helen and Nadia came to Winnipeg.
Lydia met Ray through mutual acquaintances and on February 19, 1955, they got married and began their 40-year journey together. They purchased a lot in Fort Garry on Clarence Avenue and built their home in 1958 doing some of the work themselves. Lydia loved gardening and when they first built their house, she seeded the whole front yard with flowers. She won numerous ribbons from the Horticultural Society for her flowers.
Lydia loved to provide hospitality, whether to neighbours, church friends or family and over the years, their home was host to many tea parties, New Year’s Day dinners, and other gatherings.
Lydia was also extremely caring. When her husband Ray became ill with Parkinson’s, with the assistance of daily home care she cared for him at home for four years until the last month when he had to be treated in the hospital until his passing on February 27, 1995.
After Ray’s passing Lydia travelled. Going to Hawaii twice and to Europe once with Mark, once to Las Vegas with her sister Maria and then again to Hawaii and Florida with Mark’s family.
At the age of 80 Lydia became a grandmother. Luke was born in 2005 and Matthew in 2008. She loved buying gifts and toys for them, babysitting them and taking Luke on the bus to St. Vital Centre to let him pick out his next Lego purchase and something for his brother.
Lydia was active helping others all of her life and stayed active until the end, working around her house and yard. For almost 66 years she lived in the house that they built, gradually (reluctantly) accepting more assistance from family towards the end. The family would like to thank her Dr. Ian Maharaj and the homecare workers whose care allowed her to remain in her house to within 10 days of her passing.
One of her last joys was celebrating her 100th birthday with her family, relatives and friends just a few weeks prior to her passing.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 29, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Beautiful Saviour Lutheran Church, 1541 St. Mary’s Road, with entombment to follow at Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley Street. Reception to follow at approximately 1:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.

Reception to follow at approximately 1:00 pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
