RUSSELL GREEN

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Russell Frederick Green, age 101 years. Russell passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Brandon Regional Health Centre. Russell was born at Brandon General Hospital on April 26, 1923, and lived on 14th Street in Brandon until age eight when his family moved to the Heaslip District, MB, to farm. Russell recalled his initial confusion at not being able to find the bathroom in that house, whereupon he was directed to the privy outside! The family subsequently moved to the Chater District, MB, to farm in 1941.

Russell attended Fairfax School, finished high school at Brandon College, and completed several years of university at Brandon College and the University of Manitoba before returning to take over the farm when his father’s health failed. He remained a farmer for the rest of his life, retiring from operating equipment in his 90s, but still helpful in fetching parts and moving equipment.

Russell moved into Riverheights Terrace in 2015, living there until entering the hospital in early July. Russell enjoyed participating in poker nights, pool nights, outings, and was beloved by the staff and residents.

In addition to farming, Russell was a lifelong learner, interested in and informed on current events, reading newspapers and magazines until days before his passing. His knowledge was helpful in his participation in organizations and boards over the years. He was a member of the boards of the Canadian Seed Growers' Association, Manitoba Canola Growers Association, Clinton School District, Manitoba Hog Marketing Board, Provincial Exhibition, and chaired the board of the Brandon General Hospital.

Russell will be lovingly remembered by his children Jim, Patti (Alvin), Doug (Michelle), and Don (Jill), their families, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Russell was predeceased by his father Percy, mother Margaret, sister Frances, and wife of 61 years, Mona. He is survived by his sister-in-law Sylvia Mitchell.

Russell’s funeral was held on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Brockie Donovan Chapel, and he was interred at Madford Cemetery, Douglas, MB.

The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Riverheights Terrace for their care and affection for Russell, whom they dubbed “no fuss Russ.” They are also grateful for the excellent care received from emergency room staff, fourth floor of the hospital, and third floor of Assiniboine Centre. For the last weeks of his life Russell was given superlative care by Helen Onuke and the staff of Excellence Home Palliative and Hospice Care.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Russell’s memory may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Russell was my first cousin and although l never got to know him really well I did know him. As a child we went out to Uncle Percy’s farm quite often in the fall to help with the harvest. My dad Leonard Green stayed at Percy’s but mother and us girls would go and stay with mother’s family in Brandon. I am 90 now so my memory of those times is vague but l remember my sister and l would follow Russell around the farm as he did his chores. My sister and l visited Russell and Mona once or twice in later years but not sure what years but in the 2000’s. We enjoyed our visits with him. We also knew Frances and did visit her in B.C once or twice. They were good people and we were proud of our cousins. I have been wondering for some time if Russell and Mona were still alive and decided to google it. Now I know. And just so recently Russell passed. My condolences to all the family.
