Amelita Schmidt died peacefully on July 25, 2024 at Concordia Hospital. She was a resident of Meadowood Manor at the time of her death.
Amelita was born April 15, 1927, in the Ljesobuda area, near the town of Ushomirskova, in the District of Korostensky, in what is today Ukraine. At six months of age, she came to Canada with her parents, Reinhold and Drusilla Stober. They settled in the Overstone area of southeastern Manitoba. Her father worked as a farm labourer until they saved enough money to run their own farm. Amelita’s sister, Linda was born in 1930. Amelita attended Bradley School in the Tolstoi area until 1938 when the family moved to Vancouver for one year. While there, she attended Sir Sanford Fleming School. The family moved back to Overstone and Amelita attended Overstone School, Bradley School, and Tolstoi High School where she completed her public education. She then went to Success Business College in Winnipeg where she graduated with Honours in Business Education. After graduation she worked three years in administrative support for the Department of Health and Welfare in Adoptions. She then attended the Christian Training Institute in Edmonton, Alberta for three years. She returned to Winnipeg to work for the Baptist World Alliance Immigration Program under the direction of Dr. Sturhahn. While she attended the Christian Training Institute, she met Alfred Schmidt, and they married on June 9, 1951, and settled in Winnipeg. In 1952, when her first child, Glen, was born, she stayed at home to look after her family. Her second son, Greg, was born in 1955. In 1964 she went back to work outside the home for the Manitoba Ministry of Education Vocational Branch. She worked there until her retirement in 1982.
Amelita was a member of McDermot Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and participated in programs for married couples. She enjoyed quilting and was a member of the Manitoba Prairie Quilters. She also enjoyed reading and various word games such as crosswords and word searches. Amelita was a great cook and enjoyed baking. She took pride in preparing family meals and enjoying the company of her family around the table. She also liked to travel. A particular highlight was a trip to England, Scotland, and Wales that she made with her husband, Alfred. She and Alfred made many trips to Saskatchewan, Alberta, and BC. They attended Expo 67 in Montreal and Expo 86 in Vancouver.
Her husband Alfred died in June 2010. Amelita is survived by her sister Linda (in Edmonton), her sons Glen (Mary Josephine), Greg (Marianne), four grandchildren, Anna Marie (Darcy), Brandy (Blake), Lisa (James), and Leigh (Leanne), and five great-grandchildren.
The family would like to convey sincere appreciation for the care and community provided at Meadowood Manor.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Meadowood Manor Foundation.
