IVADELL (IVY) DOREEN TELFER (BOTHWELL)

1933 – 2024

Peacefully on July 22, 2024 after a brief illness we lost Ivadell our dear sister, aunt and friend.

She was predeceased by her loving husband John (Jack) Telfer as well as her sister Florence Archer (Stan) and brother James Bothwell (Jean).

Left to cherish many fond memories of Ivadell are her sister Audrey Houston, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Her close long-time friend Pat Challis (and family) also held a special place in Ivy's heart.

Ivadell was born to John and Mae Bothwell on February 20, 1933 in the Makinak area of Manitoba. She had a happy childhood on the family farm but at age 13 she left to reside at the Ste. Rose Convent in order to follow her dream of learning to play the piano. After completing high school, she chose a career as an elementary school teacher. After briefly teaching in a rural school she moved to Winnipeg and spent the majority of her career teaching at William Osler and Queenston schools. She is fondly remembered by many of her former students. She always tried to instill her love of reading in her students as well as young members of her family.

She and Jack were married in 1963 and enjoyed a devoted loving relationship until his passing in 2004. In retirement they pursued their many varied interests but especially gardening in their large park like Charleswood yard.

Ivadell was a kind and gentle person who saw only the good in others. We will all miss her greatly.

Rest in peace Dear Lady

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Rest in peace Auntie Ivadell. You can now visit my mum and dad, and reminisce about the good old times. I will always remember your visits to our camp in Lake of the Woods. Such great times we had together, those are the memories of you that I cherish. You are a wonderful lady, and I will miss you so much. You were such a good friend to my mum, now you can be together again. - Posted by: Leslie Airth (Friend) on: Dec 21, 2024

  • Heartbreaking news that this special lady has passed away. One day, years ago, grade 4. In class Mrs.Telfer said something that I objected to. I looked her straight in the eye, in front of the entire class and said, "Who do you think you are, Miss America or something!?" Mrs Telfer didn't know if she should burst out laughing or send me straight to the principles office! I remember coming home at the end of the last day of school and the start of summer vacation. I went right downstairs to see my Mom as she was doing laundry. I was in tears. She said "Whats wrong, what happened?" I told Mom I was so sad because I was going to miss Mrs.Telfer. During my grade 4 year I bought a budgie bird just like hers and called him Toby. The same name as her bird. Then I invited her over for lunch at my house to meet my Toby. Mrs.Telfer and I drove to my house for lunch in her big blue car! Years later, I was maybe 30, I looked in the phone book and found her address. I knew she lived on Pepperloaf. I just didn't know the number. I drove to her home, knocked on the door and without a second to think, Mrs Telfer was at the door greeting me, Devi Gershbain by name!!!! She invited me in for a lovely visit. Over the years, the last 25+, we never missed sending each other a card during the holidays. I'd find her the perfect Christmas card and she'd find me the perfect Chanuka card. I treasured knowing each holiday I'd get a card in the mail from my grade 4 teacher, Mrs.Telfer. I knew this exceptional lady for 48 years. Tough as nails, no nonsense, the most perfect hair and the best cursive writing you've ever seen. And a hero to me all my life. I will always love you Mrs.Telfer and will greatly miss our years long friendship. - Posted by: Devi M Gershbain (Student Grade 4) on: Aug 06, 2024
